Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Acevedo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Heather thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the most unexpected problems I’ve faced in my business is my age, and being held back by other stylists. I always knew I wanted to be a hairdresser since I was five years old. I started my business when I was twenty years old. I woke up one morning and decide I no longer wanted to work for someone else I wanted to be my own boss and spread my wings. I was tired of being at the bottom, and lets be honest sweeping up and washing others color bowls wasn’t really my dream job. Of course we all start some where but the hair salon industry is very cut throat. You either have the passion and drive or you sink and swim. I refused to sink in swim I had a lot of people to prove wrong. My age has definitely played a factor in the salon. Alot of people think because your younger you don’t have the same skill as someone who is older. If there is one thing I’ve learned in the beauty industry is age doesn’t really matter. We all have our own unique skills that will shine through. I like to let my work speak for itself.
Heather, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I was a little girl I remember both of my parents taking me to the salon/barber shop with them. The intoxicating smells of the shampoo bar all the spritz and sprays for the hair. Shears glistening sharp one wrong move that could cut a finger off. The stylists moved their bodies with grace and precision, it was like watching a ballet. The best part was the end, when they would spin all the ladies around in the chair and they’d cry and go “OOH AH I feel so beautiful.” Those four words right there is why I wanted to become a hairdresser. I wanted to make people feel beautiful. Growing up I was always different, I dreamed of pink hair, purple hair all the colors of the rainbow. My parents didn’t approve of this career for me in the beginning, my friends and family thought it was a joke. They’d ask me when I was going to get a “real job”. They used to tell me I’d be a beauty school drop out. Now 7 years later I have my own little salon (Bombshell Boutique) located in the heart of Portage Park, Chicago. I am a blonding specialist and vivid specialist. I have the most amazing supportive clients, I couldn’t be more thankful. The journey to become a hairstylist was not easy, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I am always welcoming new clients.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been to always put your name out there. I leave my business cards everywhere from coffee shops to the the bathrooms in the bars. My books are never closed, they are always open ready for more growth.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is word of mouth and mom groups on facebook. I am also a mom to two wonderful little girls. Us moms we talk and talk when we find a product or someone we really like. Mom’s are the best critics.
