Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenna Casey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jenna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
About Hearts in San Francisco Introduced in 2004, the citywide public art project, Hearts in San Francisco, featured 131 5’ tall Heart Sculptures designed by both local and national established and emerging artists. The unique works of art were featured in plazas, parks, and street corners throughout San Francisco. Since the inaugural year, more than 500 Hearts have been created to benefit programs at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG). Hearts are auctioned and sold, and more than $12 million in proceeds from heart sculptures alone have supported San Francisco General Hospital Foundation’s efforts to fund innovative projects and initiatives that provide high-quality compassionate care at ZSFG. Jenna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Hearts in San Francisco project debuted in 2004. 131 heart sculptures, created by local Bay Area artists, were placed on display throughout San Francisco for the public to enjoy. After three months, they were auctioned by the Foundation in support of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
The Foundation raised nearly 3 million dollars for ZSFG in that first year. Today, we carry on this tradition by commissioning and auctioning a new set of hearts each year at our annual gala. The funds raised support those delivering on the promise of accessible and equitable health care for all in our city.
The San Francisco General Hospital Foundation (SFGHF) is pleased to announce the 26 artists selected to participate in the Hearts in San Francisco 2023 public art project supporting excellence in patient care and innovation at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG).
“We are absolutely thrilled by this year’s Hearts artists,” Kim Meredith, CEO of SFGHF, said. “They include professional and amateur artists working across a variety of mediums, all coming together to showcase the diversity, resiliency, and vibrancy of the San Francisco Bay Area community. From established artists in public art and burgeoning young creators, to a staff member and a former patient at ZSFG, this year’s ‘Heartists’ demonstrate the power of art to connect us, inspire us, and heal us. We couldn’t ask for more uplifting themes as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Zuckerberg San Francisco General.”
The 2023 Hearts in San Francisco series will include six large heart sculptures, eight tabletop heart sculptures, and ten mini heart sculptures, plus an additional large heart created by featured artist Sirron Norris and ten special hearts commemorating the 150th anniversary of ZSFG.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
