We were lucky to catch up with Caroline Dorick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caroline , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risk taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I took a huge risk once; I rolled the dice and placed a bet on myself. When the world was telling me I couldn’t…I did! I suppose the best way to explain would be to start at the beginning.
At the age of 26 years old I found myself a single mother of a four month old baby girl. I had a full-time job in which I was told there were no possibilities for advancement, so I needed to decide how to make more money for our little family on the side. That’s when my grandmother came to me and said, “I’ll help, if you tell me what you want to do that you will enjoy.” and I said, “I think I would like to look into becoming an Esthetician.” I had already graduated college with a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science, but decided that law school just wasn’t the direction I wanted to go in, therefore, I needed a job, but not just any job would do. I ended up enrolling in Atelier Esthetiques in Manhattan, New York. I worked during the day and went to school at night while my mother watched my daughter Caitlin. I had become a licensed Esthetician in both New York and New Jersey by the time I was 27 years old.
At 32 years old, I was remarried and had another child, my middle son, Jake. That’s when I decided to create my own LLC. I worked as a professional bridal makeup artist. My husband would work during the week and I would make as much money on the weekends as I could. The days were long and exhausting; as you can imagine working on your feet with no break and no food all day would be, but the extra cash was always needed.
Then, when I was 38 years old, I was involved in a near-fatal car accident and the course of my life and career took a dramatic change. I was diagnosed with a permanent brain injury and endured cervical spine surgery. That being said, I knew I wanted to continue what I was doing, but that something big had to change. I wanted to do something that actually helped people on a deeper level, I just didn’t know what that meant at the time. All I knew was that many of the women I had performed makeup on loved how they looked on the outside, but didn’t love how they felt on the inside, and I wanted to change that. I wanted to have some kind of impact on the lives of the women that I had viewed as beautiful, but who were unable to feel that way themselves. That’s when the vision of “Whole Beauty Bar” became a “thing” in my head. Making someone look good on the outside just no longer felt right. What was more important to me was making them feel beautiful on the inside. I had finally found my purpose, as well as being pregnant with my third and last child, my son, Austin, at 40 years old.
I believe I was saved in that car that day for a purpose, and when I finally found my purpose, everything fell into place. Suddenly, I was a sole Esthetician renting a single room. One room slowly became two, but that still wasn’t enough. I knew that inside that building I wouldn’t be able to help as many people as I wanted to, so I went to my husband and said, “I have to have visibility so I can touch the lives of as many people as I possibly can, and if that can’t happen, then I’m going to stop.” He said, “Do you think you can do it?” and I replied, “I don’t know, but I think it’s worth the risk.” Soon after, I opened my first Whole Beauty Bar storefront, a small business striving only to have some kind of impact on the lives of others.
At Whole Beauty Bar our motto is “All things good for you inside and out,” because I believe that beauty, health, and wellness are intrinsically related. I believe you can’t be beautiful on the outside unless you feel beautiful on the inside. I believe that holistic health is the definition of self-improvement. To me, self-improvement is a simple equation: self-love plus self-care equals self-improvement. If we are not evolving and improving, then we are not plunging forward and if we are not moving forward then we are stuck; status quo. Change is a good thing and positive change is even better.
I am now a wife of 20 years, a mother of 3 beautiful children and an Entrepreneur. My name is Caroline Dorick, I am an NCEA and Oncology Certified Master Esthetician and the proud owner of a second location. Very soon, Whole Beauty Bar will be the first full-service, 100% Wholistic Beauty, Health and Wellness Day Spa in our county.
I do feel my life has come full circle. I am whole, but ever evolving. I wouldn’t change anything I went through, because had it not happened I probably would have placed my bet on someone else.
So, to answer your question and describe a time when I took a risk, the risk I took was on myself. That being said, as I plunge forward you can be sure the best is yet to come…

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Don’t be a boss, be a good human. Understand, have compassion, and empathy. Knowing that your staff are people who have problems, disabilities, strengths, and weaknesses. They will help you to learn how to treat them as individuals and not employees who are just meant to “work”for you. Help them so they can better help you.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I don’t have “costumers”, I have clients that I build lasting relationships with. Each person gets 150% of my energy, time, and knowledge.
