SubscribeWe caught up with the brilliant and insightful Casandra Pena a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Casandra , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
My name is Casandra and I’ve had many jobs I have worked since I was 13.
The office was never for me except for when I worked for John Casablanca’s and I felt like I worked for myself and it was a very creative environment. I learned most of my skills with people in the food and beverage industry whether that’s in restaurants or high profile events or high volume events.
Have spent time learning myself to be more comfortable with people after losing my identity years ago & flying under the radar for so long. Bartending has definitely shown me more of who I am & helped build more confidence in how I present myself. Through the years I have also learned About my exceptional palate through friends as cooking Real , delicious food is what I do.
Things took a turn In 2020 . We were told of an outbreak and food and beverage people especially in Texas were not put in a good position . Because I had already done research in this area and knew that it was coming at some point I could not participate in the frenzy. The worst thing is that I had just landed 3 new companies that I worked to get for years and had a couple events lined up with 2 of them and they were dropped . Had another private event lined up and it was dropped as well . This halt to everything happened RIGHT when my bread & butter season was starting.
That’s when I realized I needed to figure something out so that I could continue to pay my bills. Had also just started at a restaurant which I hadn’t done for years and 2nd night on the floor I made good money but even they fired everyone.
An intro to this experience is that I am a 2 time cancer Warrior and one of the greatest things I learned was to no longer be divided against myself and go against my conscience .. This whirlwind in 2020 was not going to be an exception . Putting a mask on my face was completely going against my spirit because I knew the truth behind what was going on & I was.not going to play with my own mind or join the re-training of the subconscious on the masses (while promoting the never proven germ theory for something never found)
And I will leave it at that. So because I could not participate I realized that I should probably do something with the indoor organic garden that I had. An indoor and balcony garden with all non genetically modified plants which I tended as part of my disgust with most planta people buy being patented & owned by the government. Plus with all of the compliments I received for years from friends telling me that I should open a restaurant.Well I had 0 in savings .. but was blessed to find out that there is such thing as having an online store. This literally never crossed my mind in the history of me living to have an online store. I knew that I had some staples that I made that were perfection that would be perfect to be the 1st products in my store. And through my cancer battle when I 1st started learning about Real Food I knew that more people needed it in their life to stay healthy and I knew that the choices we have in the physical stores were severely lacking. There are different definitions of real food on the Internet but my definition of real food is food with nothing synthetic in it which includes nothing genetically modified. It is food the way it was supposed to be where the dairy and proteins are all grass fed and pasture raised. Where the sugar and the food is nutrient dense and low glycemic. I healed myself from a very bad black mold sickness through real food so I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to start bringing it to the marketplace & creating what I want to see more of in this country. Another exciting aspect was thinking about the fact that I could grow the herbs that I put in my teas and I could pick fresh herbs for people that are the way God created them- with the full medicine- and not patented & manipulated.
The beautiful cherry on top was because of my lack of money ~ I could save money by growing & sourcing my own herbs.
And this was the start of HippieHappenin. I see the word hippie as rebelling against the choices that we have in the food marketplace. Rebelling against the monopoly of our food and rebelling against the patenting of our plants . Because I had never had a store before, just researching alone was tons of hard work. Had no time for friends, had no time for anything. But I plugged away and almost 3 years later it is growing beautifully. My goal is to start getting some money in savings and have this business running like a well oiled machine. And down the line hire an assistant that also values freedom of comscience and not being coerced by a job to do something that you’re against.
Am currently a quarter / halfway to my goal of how much I would like to make per month off my business. This business is my dream, as humble as it is, and it will help me continue to live more autonomously. It’s in line with the change I wanna see – going against the machine that is Agenda 21.
If there was one thing we learned in the past couple years, it’s that autonomy can be a beautiful thing because then you’re less likely to be coerced into something you don’t want. Through that time there were still some companies and some people wanting the staff to wear masks and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. That included private events I garnered through my reputation- and in that case I declined those events & set a precedent which made me work my business even harder. Not to mention I was very shadowbanned on different social media platforms so that suffocated my marketing reach. But I overcame all.
As time has gone on I have been very satisfied especially of helping people be less dependent on pharmaceuticals and educating people on the beauty of nature’s medicine.Today I am extremely blessed because my business works around my Passion of helping people, being an activist & being creative !

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My store provides cute gifts like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe coffee mugs and tumblers.. True aroma therapy through essential oils in my candles and bath products. Real food items like hummus, pesto, banana pumpkin bread, salsa & sriracha from my own organic peppers, gourmet teas, health shots, etc . One product that is very popular right now are my Grass Fed Beef tamales & Red chile pork tamales which has pasture raised chicken bone broth in the NON GMO corn masa, along with grass fed butter . Authentic, North Mexican style tamales That are better for your heart, inflammation, waist line and cholesterol then the typical tamales. A recent review on one of my store platforms, Etsy, said they are the beat clean tamales you can buy anywhere.
There is much more to come. One thing that has influenced some of my products ams continues to influence is the fact that my loved 1 suffers from Parkinson’s which is why I just added a St. John’s Wort tincture..
I am very proud of the fact that 1 facet of my business is making things fresh for order. It is also a lovely thing to be able to add to the ecosystem with non genetically modified plants for our wonderful pollinators while also using those plants in my teas and health products. I encourage people if they don’t know which tea or shot they want and have specific symptoms to leave me a note so I can tailor their product. This is not something I have ever seen in the marketplace and for me it Was a no brainer to offer this as an option. Bei g creative with ideas is important in this world of so many people comfortable in their processed food choices & synthetic, or bigger brand medicine.
Social media, specifically TikTok, has greatly become my friend in marketing my business . And you can find me on Facebook (,although currently locked out for God knows how long) , Instagram & TikTok – @HippieHappenin

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What I believe has brought the most customers to my store Is my consistent social media presence where I show people my wealth of knowledge which stays in the same arena of the WHY of my business & prpducts. It has been a daily grind to sell myself so that people will give me credit. Because the marketplace that I chose is extremely extremely competitive and people tend to be very set in their ways.. With so many mainstream medicines it’s hard work to make a niche for natural medicine by a very small business. But thank God I have a lot of stamina, I drink wonderful natural living water through minerals that greatly helps. The daily plugging away , plus research, has definitely shown much progress since 2020.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During the very start of my business my apartments decided to try and swindle me and make me pay for something I didn’t have with very deceptive language. I didn’t have the money for it and I would not bow down to them so I ended up getting evicted. Another thing that happened was my TikTok account which was at 3300 followers was banned. This is where almost all of my customers came from so this was a really hard blow and I had to start from scratch and really build-up another account. Then I started an extra backup account and started working on 2 accounts. Another blow was when Etsy decided to remove 2 of the highest selling products from my store.
That’s when I realized that my research into a second store needed to be put to good use. I opened a second online store I made videos about it, I changed all my links and now I have customers coming to 2 stores.
I typically show reviews from my Etsy shop but I prefer that people shop on my Big Cartel store as there as less fees for me:
