We recently connected with Cami Stafford and have shared our conversation below.
Cami, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I think one of the biggest risks I’ve taken was starting my business. As a hair and makeup artist, you have to have the products to cover all skin types, & shades before you can even work. It’s a big investment. You also want to use quality products especially in bridal. It was a little scary having to invest so much into something not knowing if it would fail or succeed. Then there’s good lighting, chairs, brushes, etc. After you’ve invested all this money, you have to figure out a good price point for your services and travel. The risk has definitely been worth it. Investing in making a career out the artistry I really love has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The best advice I can give is to not give up. It may start out slow, keep pushing. Bring a friend in and do their makeup and hair to post. When it’s slow it’s the best time to get quality content!
Cami, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Cami Stafford, I own Glam By Cam LLC! My love for all things beauty started when I was very young. My mom used to work for Clinique. I would watch her get ready everyday with amazement. So many beautiful colors, packaging, products. I fell in love. Since my mom worked for Clinique, one of the first things I learned was the importance of skincare & how to identify your skin type. Skincare plays a HUGE roll in your makeup application. When your skin is taken care of and prepped properly, makeup sits on your face so beautifully & the longevity is much better. In high school, I started doing my friends hair and makeup for fun. We’d all get glammed up to go walk around the mall or go to Steak & Shake. I took a break for a while of course still playing with makeup on myself. I started filming TikTok’s doing everyday looks, creative looks, skincare etc. I began to have people reach out to me asking to pay me to do their makeup & hair for events. The shock I had realizing I could get paid to do something I loved & was passionate about. It felt like a dream. I decided to go all in and Glam By Cam was born. I started by doing small weddings, Boudoir hair and makeup, and I offered to do a few services for free to begin to get my name out there. The inquiries started rolling in. We now have a team of 7 AMAZING artists. I love my team. I got extremely blessed with them. We offer Hair and makeup for any type of event or occasion. We even offer luxury skin prep in some of our bridal packages. All of our packages include a full face, lashes, & skin prepping. I also create a Beauty Timeline for our brides so there is no stress the day of the wedding. I’m very picky with my girls, they each posses a very special talent. One of my favorite things to say is “you’re never done learning”. You can be the BEST in the whole country but there’s always room to grow. Consistent learning is what’s going to put you on top. I continue to take masterclasses to learn as much as I possibly can and provide my clients with the most amazing service possible. The most important thing I think Glam By Cam brings to the table is our personalities & energy. The first 15 minutes of your wedding day is going to set the vibe for the entire day. It is Glam By Cam’s top priority to arrive with good vibes. We love, and accept everybody. We like to turn our clients into our friends and really establish a relationship with them. This to me is EXTREMELY important. We want you to look and feel beautiful but we also want to provide a carefree, upbeat, friendly environment. There’s so many things I’m proud of for my brand. I’m proud of how far we’ve come, I’m proud of this amazing team we’ve built, I’m proud to watch all of our work progress and grow. I could go on and on. I’ve made so many meaningful relationships in this industry, not just from my team and other artists, but from my clients. I’m so thankful for each and every one of you.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a hair and makeup artist is definitely that final look. When you’ve finished their look and hand them the mirror. The look they get on their face is priceless. I’ve seen it bring tears to people’s eyes. That moment when they feel the most beautiful they’ve ever felt is enough to make me cry. I have cried during that moment. In that exact moment all I can think of is how extremely blessed I am to be the one that gets to bring them this moment. It makes me feel so happy and warm inside.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is tricky to say the least. The biggest advice I can give is to stay consistent in posting to build that presence. The followers will come if you’re doing something you’re passionate about. Keep in mind, there is NO ONE like you. There is absolutely no one who can do exactly what you do. You are unique. Don’t try to blend in with the rest, stay true to you and stand out. Hash-tagging is also very helpful. Tag the brands you use, sometimes they may see it and share it or comment. Do a giveaway to start building a following! They do typically very well and bring new people to your page.
