We were lucky to catch up with Kylee Barrett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kylee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I initially went to cosmetology school to pursue my dream of doing hair, something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a little kid. I have always been into the beauty industry, I would spend hours with myself or friends doing hair, make up, eyebrows, and everything beauty.
While I was in cosmetology school, I shortly learned that hair was not my passion. Eyelash extensions were. I learned eyelash extensions initially on YouTube the year before I started school. I took an eyelash extension course once I was in cosmetology school to get certified and learn the deep ins and outs of lashes. I spent most of my time doing lashes, I was known as the “lash girl” in school.
I loved eyelash extensions so much, the fear of losing that hobby for myself got in the way of pursuing that dream full time. I had people in my corner telling me I could shoot for the stars and I had people not in my corner telling me I wouldn’t be successful in the industry. I let the demons and the fear overpower me for a long time, years in fact. I continued doing eyelash extensions part time until April of 2022.
I participated in a mental toughness program called 75 hard. If you have never heard of this, it is a program that teaches mental toughness, clarity, and much more. During Phase 1 of this program, it required 10 minutes of dedicated visualization a day for 30 days straight. This dedicated visualization consists of manifesting your goals & successes for your future. At this time in my life I had been lashing for 7+ years and never lost the love and passion I had for doing lashes.
It was during this Phase that I realized it was time to stop fulfilling somebody else’s dream and chase my own. I made a decision to quit my full time job as a dental assistant and go all in on my own career. I had been dating somebody new since January who lives in Utah County, so I had to make a decision on where I would be taking my next step. I not only quit my full time job but I up and moved my business an hour south from Davis County to Utah County which required starting over in a whole new way. I signed for my new salon suite on Day 15/30 of Phase 1. I had to work hard to grow a new clientele, make the hour long commute every day until I could financially afford to move.
Taking this risk caused a lot of fear, hope, tears, and growth for me. Moving my business to a new location where you don’t know anyone comes with many challenges. It requires hard work to reach a new network of people, to keep pushing through, and to not give up on yourself. Now, 8 months later my business is growing, the largest it has ever grown, and is only continuing to grow. It is a daily reminder to never give up on yourself and to take the risk. Go for your dreams because YOU are special and YOU are capable.
I am grateful for the people in my corner cheering me on, I am grateful for the relationships I have built with my clients and other people in the industry. I am grateful for pursuing my dreams and shooting for the stars.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi all, my name is Kylee! I am an eyelash extension artist. I opened my very first small business KRB Lashes, named after myself Kylee Rae Barrett in May of 2017 at the young age of 19 just after I graduated cosmetology school in 2016. Growing up, I’ve loved all things beauty. I found during cosmetology school that eyelash extensions were my all time passion.
I offer many services. I offer eyelash extensions, lash lifts, brow laminations, tints, and microblading. I enjoy doing every single one of these services and the confidence it brings my clients.
One of my favorite things I look forward to every day is finishing my clients lashes and witnessing them looking in the mirror and feeling fresh & confident about themselves. I am a big believer in self care and I love that I can help people feel like their best selves.
I love and enjoy the connections I have with my clients. I make their experience personable and suitable for them.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been social media. Since moving my business to Utah County I have had to find new outlets to network myself and my business. I started from scratch to build my Instagram, I first shared it on my personal page and got a good initial following from there. From there, I collaborated with others on a few giveaways, posted on Facebook pages, and stayed consistent on posting on my Instagram page. It has been so fun and rewarding to see how successful it has been and continuing to be!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The resource that has most significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking has been taking part in the 75 hard program. It taught me mental toughness, earned skills, self confidence, self belief, responsibility, accountability, capability, and dedication. It helped me prove to myself that I can conquer anything I set my mind to. I promise that anyone who does this program and finishes, will never be the same person again. It truly changes you life forever, for the better.
