We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jackie Penrice a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jackie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I wanted to start doing the things that matched my personality. I followed what came natural, what fueled me, but that came at a course of having to move forward in spite of fear or beliefs.
Jackie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was always passionate about words, expression and my love for the English language that began while growing up in New York during a time when and where Hip Hop was originating. Creative stories told over melodic beats that were invigorating and relatable to the listener.
I was born in Doctor’s Hospital in Freeport, NY which not longer exists. I lived in Hempstead, Long Island, NY and in my early 30’s moved to Georgia.
Prior to Georgia, marriage, children and divorce, I would go to a local venue called “Cornbread & Caviar” in Baldwin, NY. It was a socializing bar scene on the main floor with a dimly lit, laid back mellow vibe, with spoken word and bongo players, folks ordering food and drinks at small candle lit tables. Others would sit at seats in front of the stage where the host would recite and joke between sets of open mic. I would recite spoken word there sporadically for enjoyment purposes and the host took a liking to my poetry so he would call me to the mic with a nice little introduction.
Upon moving to Georgia, as a wife and mother of 2 daughters, I put all my creative passions on hold to raise my family. After divorcing, I wanted to do something for myself, I began joining ToastMasters class on my lunch break every Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, I decided to take advantage of an opportunity offered with my in-law’s Blog and host sit-down interviews, Red Carpet interviews with celebrities in addition to Atlanta’s accomplished individuals.
Today, I am now work independently and have the sole creative ability to work in Media and Communications, radio, and spoken word and I have recently launched a Webcast that serves as a platform to showcase woman that are passionate, successful, forward thinking, and innovative in their niche.
