We recently connected with Brandon’ Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon’ , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Producing music is such a rabbit hole. I’ve spent hours on YouTube watching all kinds of tutorials and tricks and tips to help get a grasp on it. Overthinking is one of the hardest things to overcome with music production. Do what you want and if it sounds good it sounds good. There are endless ways to produce music so you have to decide what works best for you. I think that mixing and mastering has definitely been the hardest learning curve for me. I would recommend taking lessons from someone that is knowledgeable in that field. It’s easy to get stuck on one thing and then you get writers block which is hard to get out of. Don’t be so critical on your music it’s the hardest thing I still haven’t got past.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started producing music about 5 years ago and really wanted to create my own brand/sound. The Xenotype project really hits the nail on the head with the weird sound designs and spacey textures and pads that make you feel like your in a sci-fi movie. I’ve always loved making music, I played the drums for years and feel like I have a good ear for it. I started playing a few small shows in 2019 and progressed from there when I saw that people liked what I was bringing to the table. I started making merch that was selling out fast so I knew that I was creating a very supportive and dope fan base. I’m proud of my organic growth with my music. I know I have a long road ahead of me but I definitely won’t give up. I couldn’t do it without the support of my fans and supporters. I love each and every one of you !
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I really find a lot of joy In watching people have fun and get down at my shows. I really want to play as many festivals as I can and play in a bunch of new cities and show people what I’ve been working on. I’m always pushing the envelope with my music and trying new things.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There is no better feeling than throwing down some music that I made and watching people have a great time and the expressions on their faces. It definitely keeps me motivated.
