We recently connected with GFM Recording Studios and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, GFM thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
We met in 2016 at Chapman Recording & Mastering in Kansas City after going to school for music, and that is where our team started. We came up under the greatest mentors this region has to offer; Chuck Chapman and Robert Rebeck. This really expedited our learning process. Having Chuck as a mentor/consultant once we opened our own studio, saved us from making numerous missteps, and got us through some very tricky situations. We have learned so much over the years, but some the most essential skill is knowing how to treat people with respect and honesty. We can be the best producers in the world, but without clients, we would be nothing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For folks who may not have read about you before, can you please tell our readers about yourself, how you got into your industry / business / discipline / craft etc:
We both grew up around music since we were young children. Our fathers were instrumental in developing our love and passion for music. Starting as teenagers, we both played in school bands, and rock bands outside of school. This really helped develop our musicianship, and to a degree, our knowledge of how music works, and inspired us to pursue music on a deeper level.
After years of playing in bands we both went to school for music/recording and met for the first time when we were interning at Chapman Recording & Mastering in 2016.
what type of products/services/creative works you provide:
After years of practice and growth, we started our own commercial recording studio in 2019. Since then, we have been providing our clients with premium music and audio services in a world-class recording facility designed and built by Steve Durr (designer for Sony Music, Capitol Music Nashville, Disney, Garth Brooks and countless others).
We currently offer custom music production/composition of all styles of music, recording, mixing and mastering, and since 2020 we have been offering our services remotely as well. We have also taken a team approach to music, similar to how they do it in all of the major music markets including Los Angeles. This allows us to bring twice the experience and expertise to every project we are fortunate enough to work on; and working remotely allows us to provide our services to people all around the world. In 2022 alone we worked with artists from 13 different countries!
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.:
Over the past few years there has been an increase in demand for our production services. We have produced everything from club style hip hop, to gospel, blues, rock and almost everything in between. Our style of production has allowed us to work with some really cool people on some really cool projects.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of what we do is helping people make the best music possible. Being musicians and artists for many years before we opened the studio, we know how hard it is to create great music, especially if you don’t live in LA, Nashville or a music city. We have experienced this reality first hand when we were in bands. Now, with the help of the internet and technology we have the opportunity to help people pursue and fulfill their dreams in music every day of the week, no matter where they live. Sometimes we help create something out of nothing, and sometimes we help by getting out of the way and letting people go wild with their creativity. Each day is a totally new experience, and we love it!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Absolutely! We opened our business in 2019 with basically no clients. In our first year we worked hard to advertise and get our name/music in front of people. Right as things were starting to pick up for us, COVID hit and everything shut down. At first it was a bit intimidating, but we shifted pretty quickly to offering our services online. With all of the advances in technology, people are recording and making high quality music in all kinds of places; hotel rooms, tour buses, at home, even in the car sometimes… This created an opportunity for us to help artists all over the world with their music. It has been a crazy ride, but it has certainly been rewarding, and it has kept our studio alive.
