We recently connected with Tania Ruiz and have shared our conversation below.
Tania, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
Starting your own business is a journey that most people do not understand. I come from a background where being successful was defined as getting a job with good benefits and a pension.
From the start, my expectation was that everyone would support, but as I started progressing in my journey, I noticed that not everyone would be. I would ask them to share my content or take pictures of my merchandise and when they didn’t do it, it made me feel like they didn’t want to support me but then I realized maybe they are not my target audience. I am learning that people just want to see the finished product. They want to see the result but are unsure of how to be a part of the process. I know its not intentional. I have learned to just keep going and everything will fall into place.
Tania, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I was a young girl, I was very much into entertainment. I loved to sing, dance and I was always the life of the party. I love speaking with people and have realized that building relationships with people takes a certain skill. The idea of starting my own podcast/ business came after the COVID pandemic. Since everyone was under lock down, I wanted to reach people that were unreachable. I took my experience of motherhood and Notorious Momz was born. My podcast is based on my experiences as a mom and the ugly side of things, or the side less spoken of. Motherhood is not always pretty. It is hard, frustrating, and sometimes there are things that we want to say but because of fear of judgment we don’t. Mothers are always crucially looked at because we have an important job to raise our children and are often blamed when children do things outside of what people are accustomed to. I offer a safe space for people to say what they feel and not be judged. My podcast also allows people to be transparent and authentic. Along with the podcast I also make my own merchandise that I have on my website available for purchase. What sets me apart from others is that I am genuine, I am a go getter. I know what I want, and I go for it. I am a fierce spirit and people gravitate towards me because of my personality. I am most proud of the fact that I had a vision and I stopped being scared and went for it. In the beginning I had a lot of doubts. I didn’t think that people would like to listen to me or take the time out to watch my videos. It was surprising the feedback that I have gotten. I want people to know that they should continue to be brave to have faith in the process and believing in yourself is the biggest flex.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
People spend a lot of time on social media and how I have been building my audience is by being consistent. Consistency is key to building and audience in my opinion. People want to see new content as often as possible. You also must make it interesting and entertaining. My advice for people just starting is stay consistent, be authentic and be entertaining. Also you must be patient and do not get discouraged ever when things seem like it’s not moving. The process is slow, but it will be rewarding.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being creative is freedom. The freedom to use your talent as you see fit. For me it is also therapeutic. I enjoy being creative, innovative and learning new things. I also enjoy teaching people new things and having conversations that may help someone with a particular issue.
