We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Linsey Huffaker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Linsey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
So many things! I have learned that you get out of this business what you put in. When I give my time and attention to marketing, growing my social media presence, and actively seeking out clients, I book brides like crazy! Otherwise, when I let my business take the back seat, it shows. I have less traction overall which means less bookings. I also learned early on that investing in yourself through mentorships is 100% worth it! Every year I hire another photographer I admire to work with me 1-on-1 in an area I’d like to improve. It’s life-changing.
Linsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Linsey! The owner and photographer behind Linsey Huffaker Photography. I still can’t believe I get to take pictures of people FOR A LIVING! I have always dreamed of this, and one day I decided to go for it. I started taking photos of my friends and families for free, but I always have been so obsessed with weddings. My first year in business I second shot every single opportunity I was offered – it was incredible!
Now, 4 years later, I’m a full time wedding photographer and I am working to add small business branding to my full time schedule (it’s my new passion!) I absolutely love my clients and work very hard to give them a wonderful experience from beginning to end. I’m an enneagram 2 which means I am always putting others first!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Initial capital can be hard to come by. I am so lucky to say I was able to start my business without loans or going into debt. I started taking free photos for people on my humble Canon Rebel T1i with a kit lens (bought second-hand!). My first NEW lens was the nifty-fifty and I thought that thing was a game-changer. I started offering mini session marathons and taking any and every job I was asked to do. This helped me make money that I immediately put back into my business.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My best source for new clients is hands-down referrals. I take pride in providing an incredible client experience and being personable with everyone on wedding days. This has really been important for reaching new clients because they have already seen me in action and they have a positive view of me and therefore my business. The best example of this is shown when I booked a bride and groom (Ryan and Justin) for their wedding and have since shot a wedding for one of Justin’s groomsmen – Adam and his sweet wife, Maggie. Now next October I am also shooting the wedding for yet another couple in their friend group. These guys are just incredible and I feel so so SO loved and honored to continue serving them!
