We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marie Cloud a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up, my mom was was intentional about exposing us different lifestyles in hopes of inspiring us towards success. Through that she would take me to view beautiful homes in “nice neighborhoods.” I was obsessed with the homes and the beauty, and that was the springboard to my interest in the architecture and home industry. Above anything else, the confidence that I have in myself and my ability stems form the years of encouragement and modeling of and work from my mom. I am who I am because of her!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am the owner and Principal Designer of Indigo Pruitt Design Studio. An interior design firm specializing in life-giving designs and is known for its blended style approach to aesthetics. My design approach is typically the blending styles to create a new aesthetic. My projects have a fresh modern flair paired with classic and timeless elements. Cultural touches and a wellness approach help to define this story-telling aesthetic. I’m often drawn to the boldness of boutique hotels and often find inspiration when I’m relaxing in beautiful spaces. I aim for my spaces to embody the soul of its owner and the essence of what home means to them. There is something special about a room that not only looks good but also makes your soul dance and your heart sing with its boldness. Whether it’s creating lasting relationships with clients or designing their homes, it’s truly a joy to be able to blissfully design the life (and spaces) that express the beauty of life itself.
I’m most proud of so many things but the fact that Indigo Pruitt stands as a brand that is rooted in authenticity, beauty and relationship is something that truly brings me joy.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Very early on I was so eager to build my portfolio and show up in every place possible to expand my reach, visibility and clientele. This quickly led to burnout and eventually left me confused and unclear about what I wanted and here my business was headed. I had to unlearn the idea of say “yes” to every opportunity that came my way. Every project/client is not for me and I learned the importance of being clear about my goals and values. Once that was established that became my filter for decisions. If it crosses a personal boundary or value of mine then it’s an easy “no” for me. Today that’s such a feeling a freedom that I’m so thankful I’ve learned.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that I get to make my own schedule. When my husband and I decided we wanted to have kids, I knew I didn’t want a typical 9-5 job that left me on “e” by the time I arrived home to my family. Now there are long days and the workload is actually heavier. However, I control it and I try my best to not allow my calendar to run me away from my family and allow the flexibility to be a leisure.
