We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyhle Jamerson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyhle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
“I decided to be the change I wanted to see. The goal is the change the mentality of women’s football in Houston, and give the city a team they can be proud of” -Kesha Smith
Kyhle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Kyhle Jamerson is a former player in the WNFC turned owner! Originally from the California by ways of the DMV area, she moved to Texas in 2003 where she attended Jacksonville College to obtain her AA in Spanish Arts and then transferring to the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where she would double Major in Sports Medicine and Pyscology. After 16 profound years in San Antonio, she packed up and relocated to the city she quickly fell inlove with- Houston!
Over the past 12 years she’s played in various leagues like IWFA, IWFL, WFA, AFE USA, and WNFC; she decided to take the plunge and not only start a business with 3 of the most amazing people she knows, but also became a franchise co-owner of a new team in the great city of Houston, TX. Never having played with the idea of becoming an owner, the thought of challenges she’d face as new entrepreneurs, on top of working full time job as a Referral Transcriptionist at Texas Children’s Hospital, has been a fast pace but exciting journey to say the least.
Jamerson quotes “I knew when my time as a womens tackle football player was up i wanted to stay close the game, but how? Well, here how! Giving back! The thought of being able to give back to a sport that gave so much to me in every aspect of my life is everything! Being able to create a competitive environment for women who want to play the best and be the best is top tier! This definitely holds weight in my top 3 greatest achievements so far in my young life.”
About the Mambas
The Houston Mambas was formed by a dynamic group of young, fierce, competitive, and driven athletes all have one thing in common- to be the best.
The Houston Mambas have a unique blend of colors that all have meaning. A Base color of Black represents the Black mamba. When you think about the Black Mamba, you can’t help but think about Kobe Bryant and his mamba mentality.
“We don’t quit, we don’t cower, we don’t run, we endure and concur”
-Kobe Bryant
A mamba mentality will be the HEARTBEAT of the team. The accent colors will include the original Houston Oilers colors of Carolina Blue, and Red to ultimately pay homage to the Houston Oiler roots dating back to 1961.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Our organization is family own and family ran. The plan (prior to ownership) was to retire and just be patrons at future games. But when the opportunity presented itself, this was something we couldn’t pass up. Who better to run a team than former players who understand the needs of current players. We truly wanted to be the changed we needed to see. Were all close, young, relatable and passionate about this sport. The connection between our ownership of 4 is pretty simple! Deandre Hopkins all-star WR for the Arizona Cardinals and Smitty are brother and sister. Deandre is such an advocate for women’s empowerment and women in sports! Smitty and I are best friends and former teammates, and Teryni is also our former teammate and my life partner. It’s always Family over everything.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media really runs the world right now. I’ve always been social media savvy, but coming in to the General Manager role, one of the many duties I took on was the social media marketing aspect. Within the WNFC we have monthly meetings and workshops catered to branding out teams and continuous being marketable.
I’ve had the pleasure and honor to work exclusively with Erin Harville, who is currently Brand Marketing Manager for the Portland Trailblazers and also WNFC creative director. She’s really expanded my social media marketing skill sets to the next level. Broadening my horizons to new platforms where I can go crazy with creatively. The Mambas social media platforms has been going pretty good as far as engagement, content creation, insights and reaches are concerned and we’re only getting started!
