We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Kemp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My Sister’s Scrub is an all natural skincare company that was created to not only provide high quality natural skincare, but to also emphasize the importance of sisterhood as well as self-care. When thinking of the name of My Sister’s Scrub, I instantly thought about those close to me within my friendship circle as well as my older sisters. I took the time to create products with the different ingredients and scents being inspired by my bestfriend, whom I refer to as a sister, and my siblings hence the possession in “Sister’s”. Not only did I revolve the ingredients around them, but I also placed their initials on the jars/bottles that they inspired or a sisterly related name such as “sissy”, “sister”, “sis”. This is when my personal sisterhood begins reaching my customers, who are referred to as “Scrub Sisters”. Scrub Sisters then refer to the products in a sisterly form such as “Alexandria’s Brown Sugar Scrub” or “Cydni’s Honey Soap”; this makes it much more relatable. Furthermore, my Psychology degree causes me to motivate Scrub Sisters to practice self-care at least 20-30 minutes a day to ensure their mental health is put first. As a sisterly community, we all come together to share our days, talk about the products we enjoy most, and so much more. My Sister’s Scrub is more than just skincare. It has helped people, including children, recover from things such as acne while improving symptoms of eczema and psoriasis. My products are known to also provide comfort to Scrub Sisters’ skin who have undergone chemotherapy. It’s definitely a skincare family. With this, I have also been able to motivate younger entrepreneurs to start their businesses and have even encouraged other small business owners to keep working towards their dream. It’s room for us all.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I began My Sister’s Scrub as a 20 year old undergrad student at my local university with no idea how many people I would reach. Of course my dream is to be a full-time business owner, but as of now I work during the day as an educator while also currently working to obtain my Masters in Psychology degree. Working 25-30 hours a week outside of my business while ensuring all of my assignments are turned in on time isn’t always easy. I have learned my schedule down to what I would like to call “a science”. To ensure that I give the best version of myself in all of the things I do, I use planners and todo lists to provide quality services in every aspect. It takes a lot of resilience to guarantee I touch all of my bases on a daily basis. On days that I may feel discouraged or tired, I do allow myself some grace and practice the self-care components that I emphasize to others. As we all say “practice what you preach”. It takes mental toughness as well as me mapping out my mental goals to get the job done sometimes, but it’s so worth it.
