We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Wesely. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the most life-changing and significant risks I have taken is uprooting my life and moving to Denver.
About 4 years ago, I had just received an offer for a dream job at an amazing clinical hospital in Omaha, NE. Though I was super excited about the job, I felt a pull in my heart that Omaha wasn’t the right place for me to begin my career as a registered dietitian. I had just recently visited one of my best friends in Denver, CO, and could not get the city out of my head. Denver was beautiful, the people were kind, and the possibilities seemed endless.
Being the type A and calculated person that I am, it made ZERO sense for me to give up a great job and just move with little to no plan. I wanted to move but felt a lot of pushback internally to take the risk. After talking to a wise mentor of mine about the situation she said, “You need to stop thinking that there is a right and wrong decision; there is no such thing. You just need to make the decision that you feel is best for you right now. After that, you will make the next best decision for yourself, and so on.” About 1 month later, my bags were packed and I moved to Denver.
Within 4 short years, the world truly enhanced my life beyond what I could even imagine. I met & married and my wonderful husband, become a dog mom to the best boy, shifted my career, and met life-long friends.
Taylor , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up as a dancer and have always felt a direct correlation between the food I put in my body and how it made me feel. Combining food/nutrition with my love for helping people, becoming a registered dietitian was the perfect match for me.
I spent the beginning of my career in the clinical setting, which I loved and learned so much. But the more I worked in the hospital, the more I wanted to shift my career to preventive healthcare. Instead of working with patients who were sick, I wanted to help people prevent sickness through nutrition and wellness routines. For this exact reason, I opened Radiation Nutrition.
At Radiation Nutrition, we specialize in personalized wellness and weight loss programs that get to the root cause of health concerns. We help busy professionals improve their metabolism and enhance their health so that they can stop dieting, have lasting energy, and feel whole in their bodies. Unlike other approaches that promote a one-size-fits-all method, we utilize a holistic approach that incorporates personalized nutrition plans, root cause integrative lab testing, and realistic strategies that create lasting support for a fulfilled life.
At Radiate Nutrition, I am most proud of our individualized approach. We, unfortunately, live in a world of standardized diet plans that are supposed to work for everyone but they are restrictive and set people back even further. At Radiate Nutrition, we have helped clients lose weight naturally who were told by their doctors that they had to take prescribed weight loss medications to lose weight (and made them feel super icky). We have helped clients decrease their blood pressure medications. We have helped clients eliminate gut issues. We have also helped clients gain weight who struggled with the inability to keep weight on their entire lives. No matter the positive outcome that our clients get, they do so in a seamless process that doesn’t feel restrictive or complicated due to our personalized plans.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Starting my business, I had no idea where to start to grow my clientele. What has been successful for me is choosing a few different markets and staying consistent.
For myself, I chose to stay consistent on social media and reach out to new businesses in my area on a monthly basis. After doing this for a year, I have cast a very large net of the number of people who know about my services and it’s continuing to grow.
I also place high importance on giving my 1000% effort to my paying customers. Having a customer refer a friend to me is truly the best complaint I can get.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Entrepreneurship, in any field, can get lonely and overwhelming. I recommend connecting with as many fellow entrepreneurs as you can and joining groups with fellow entrepreneurs. Doing this has helped me stay inspired, motivated, has given me so many new ideas, and has provided me comfort when business decisions feel overwhelming.
I don’t view other private practice dietitians as competition; I believe there is room for everyone in my market. Becoming friends with them and helping each other out has been so fun and has really helped my business.
