Victoria , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

It’s been a little over a year since I took a leap of faith in starting my own official photography business. I had dabbled in it for years going all the way back to early high school. It was always something that I enjoyed doing because I loved to document everything in scrapbooks at a young age.

Although I no longer create scrapbooks of the images I take, I do get the privilege to meet and document so many important moments for others. I used to work for a financial institution full-time and photograph clients on the weekends only. It was a side gig that helped me keep my creative juices flowing and before I knew it, it had grown into this overwhelming passion.

Once I had my two children, it was time to do something that helped me find myself again outside of being a new mom. When I decided to create my photography business, taking that risk really helped me find “me” again.

I’m still building this and learning parts of the business daily, but I am enjoying it every step of the way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

My name is Victoria Kuhns and I am the sole owner of Victoria Brooke Photography. I’ve been capturing memories for people for nearly 9 years now which is absolutely crazy to me. Time flies when you are having fun!

I’ve always loved the concept of photography even as a kid, freezing a memory and getting to keep it forever seemed like some sort of magic. Then when I began manipulating images and adding creative twists to them, the passion grew even more.

I’m most proud of the growth that I’ve seen in myself and my work in the last couple of years. Dedication and determination are key when it comes to running your own business. I am extremely devoted to my clients and nearly all of them become dear friends. I’ve always been a people person, and I strive to create exactly what they want from their session with me.

I am a mother to two beautiful children and ever since becoming a mother, Lifestyle Family Photography has been a huge thrill to capture. I do, however, document all wonderful things prior to and after children as well. I’ve photographed weddings, engagements, maternity, newborns, announcements, senior graduations, etc. I’m extremely flexible and love to challenge myself as much as possible.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?

When it comes to creating a following for your business, the biggest thing I’ve found that has helped me has been consistency. Whether that means, posting more often, engaging on more than one social media platform, or even spreading by word of mouth. It is key when growing your business and I’m definitely still growing. I haven’t reached the top just yet but I have seen a jump in clients due to creating more consistent content and such.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of what I do is that I get to learn more and more as I go. I love meeting new people whether that’s clients or fellow photographers, it’s amazing to have people to bounce ideas off of.
Different session types also allow you to explore your creativity in different ways which is why I will never strictly be one type of photographer. I enjoy the challenge part of the job because you are never bored. Your brain is always stimulated.
