We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olga Bachilo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Olga, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
When starting my practice it was very important to me to create a place where everyone was welcome and we were able to address every cosmetic concern a patient may have. My vision was to have a cosmetic practice where we could offer every nonsurgical treatment and since I’m also a plastic surgeon, I am also able to offer surgical solutions. We would then be able to take care of our patients after their surgery and be able to provide maintenance treatments to maintain their results. It was very important to have a location where it was both convenient for my patients and close to where I reside. It took a lot of planning and preparation. I would advice anyone looking to start a practice to write out a plan and decide what is important to them and slowly work towards that plan.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Dr. Olga Bachilo and I am a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in the center of Houston Texas. Originally I am from Minsk, Belarus and I moved to Houston when I was 14 years of age with my family. I quickly fell in love with Houston and Texas and I received all of my education in the state of Texas. I completed my undergraduate degree at Rice University. I then completed my medical school education at Texas A&M and my plastic surgery residency at UTMB in Galveston. During my medical school rotations, I fell in love with plastic surgery due to its immense variety and ability to operate all over the body. I love the challenges that come with plastic surgery, and I love seeing immediate life-changing results that plastic surgery delivers to my patients. After completing my training, I returned back to Houston area to start my private practice. My focus now is purely on cosmetic procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical, and I specialize specifically in mommy makeovers. My expertise are in the drainless tummy tuck surgery, as well as breast surgery, such as breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction.
My patient’s well-being is very important to me, I want them to have the best possible experience during their surgery recovery. Therefore, I am always looking for new innovative techniques to improve outcomes, as well as post-operative care. I also truly enjoy and believe in technology, and always strive to bring the latest and most innovative devices to my medical spa. One of my mentors once send “Comfort zone is the death to progress.” This is the quote I live by and always trying to improve and get better.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Reputation is everything when it comes to business. Having happy customers alone is not enough when it comes to being successful. Having customers who rave about your services and products is the key. I have been very fortunate to have patients and clients who have supported us by referring their friends and family and also shared their stories online for others to see. Having Google reviews, Real Self reviews and other online reviews is very import. Providing a great service ensures that patients are happy, but we still need to ask to share their experience with others. We also have a third party surveys that go out to all of our patients, so that we can continuously work on improving ourselves.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Providing a great service and keeping patients and clients happy is the best strategy for growing clientele. Word of mouth and patient referral is extremely important in any business, but especially in cosmetic medicine. Starting out a practice, paid advertisement is important, but once you build a loyal following, the key to success is continued patient referral from existing customers.
