We caught up with the brilliant and insightful April Hester a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I think from a young age I always knew I was an artist just didn’t know what kind I would be. All signs pointed me towards teaching but I was being pulled towards the arts. It wasn’t until after college in 2004 my parents leveled me up and got me my first digital Canon EOS camera and it was game over.
I had got a job as an image consultant at a photography company where I worked as a liaison for Michaels Arts and Craft Store relaying the products and shot details for the photography studio. It was a dream job at the time and allowed be to start my “side hustle” of portrait photography in the DFW area. Lots of free photoshoots later I created an LLC and began taking on clients by word of mouth and eventually moved to Austin and brought on my twin sister to help me conquer this city.
I wanted everyone I photographed to walk away saying they had a great experience and to this day that’s what I strive to do. Planning a photoshoot can be stressful and when kids are involved all certainty goes out the door, so providing a positive attitude goes a long way. Till this day that’s what we want for every shoot whether it be a headshot, engagements, family, newborn, senior or wedding session I really want the client to feel comfortable and happy with their experience and photos. We are your personal hype women and our bubbly personalities shine through because we are doing what we love.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been word of mouth and referrals. 100% this has been the only thing that has brought me new clients from day one. Being in the business of capturing people’s lives I’ve been lucky to have repeat customers by providing a top notch service. Getting clients in the door at the engagement stage leads to weddings, then babies, then milestones, birthdays and so on.
Both my twin sister and I are “glass half full” kind of girls and we try to spread that vibe wherever we go. This character trait helps us find the right type of client and also helps us provide a better service for our client when we can just be our upbeat selves.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Instagram has been our bread and butter when it comes to new clients. We are a visual business and instagram helps is all about visual content.
