We recently connected with Moria McQueen and have shared our conversation below.
Moria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been sewing since I was 14 years old. I come from a family that loves to sew and my great-granny was a seamstress. When I was little I was obsessed with fashion, hoping to become a fashion designer. I used to sew my own clothes but with time my plans have changed and I ended up going to university learning Mass Communication for a degree.
After having my second child, my mum kindly suggested I get back into sewing and make things for my children. With covid changing everything for everyone, it actually made me get back into sewing.
I started making very basic organisers for my own bags because I wanted to explore new style of organisers. I didn’t like chunky and cheap or overpriced liners available. My own private collection and the need to preserve it, has helped to turn my bag addiction into a business.
I’ve never been happier to be surrounded by bags and offering help to others with their own. Helping customers to keep theirs clean and organised as well as preserving them for their daughters or family.
At Luxury Bag Heaven & Edinburghblooms, I believe any bag deserves a perfect fitting organiser/liner.
I hope my customers can celebrate their bags knowing I created the best fitting product just for them.
So they can get a feeling of a little bit of heaven when they use their bag daily.
Everything is made by myself in Scotland, United Kingdom. I even take the parcels to the post office myself!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I started, I didn’t even have a Facebook page dedicated to my work, it was a customer that has highlighted this…That maybe I should have one? When I started posting, I took terrible pictures and not much of a background. I was so insecure.
Slowly my page grew with the help of other bag lovers and friends that kept posting about my page in other Facebook groups. Although it is still under 2k, I post regularly and I have now had 2 professional photoshoots. I re use the photos but try to take better photos in the meantime. I also enrolled into a small photography course.
Instagram is whole different story…I managed to gain followers by posting reels regularly and one even went viral!
It is a slow progress, but gaining new followers on both platforms, really helped my confidence to grow.
I do however prefer to post in my dedicated Facebook group and connect with new customers there. I recommend this type of strategy to small business owners.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I started selling on eBay, for very little profit, but it brought me some experience and confidence. I still use Ebay to gain more exposure and reach to new customers.
From early days I decided a website is the way forward, I can sell what I want without getting into trouble with any platform, especially due to sensitive key words. So I put time and money into building my store, which now has over 400 products, that I can make.
Etsy is my least favourite, it’s very strict and find this brings me very little work, maybe due to competition.
I do try to sell on all of the above, just in case.
