We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Effie Bomber. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Effie below.
Hi Effie, thanks for joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
I never in a million years think I’d be getting a phone call from Netflix. It all began when I connected with Metro Skateboard Academy. After talking with many different organizations including, The City of Orlando and getting yet another no for an idea to bring more inclusivity, plus beginner skaters out and comfortable at the skate parks, Metro Skateboard Academy a Latin owned establishment would true our frown upside down.
I decided to create an inclusive to aggressive quad and inline night here in Orlando. I named it, “quad/blade night” and soon will be called, “quad/blade fest.” An important mission, as newer aggressive quad and inline skaters became more popular. Space for us was limited. Close your eyes, imagine going as the “new skater” to your first skate park, where you don’t now the etiquette, park rules, and/or are the only roller skater at the park. Skateboard wheels are very dominating in numbers and the stigma of all wheels not respecting another’s energy carried on. All these components lead to intimidation, fearfulness, anxiety, never really skating and/or not returning to the skate park. With the creation of quad/blade night, skaters of all skill levels are able to train, have fun and socialize in a quad/blade only setting.
I was able to host monthly, “quad/blade nights” at Metro Skateboard Academy. Held every 2nd week of each month, opportunities started opening up. I invited other skate crews to co-host “quad/blade nights” which led to other skate levels and skill levels to help and/or learn from these monthly events. Also, spectating was always allowed, weather you carpooled or just came to hung out/socialize, a safe space is always provided. They word got out regarding our monthly, events, charity work, private/group lessons, and “quad/blade night. Partnered with local businesses, who donated to monthly events and Quadtoberfest competition, Orlando’s first quad driven competition, created right here by Eat_MySkates.
In 2021, I received a call the Netflix was looking for a skate instructor, always thankful Metro Skateboard Academy. So much positive came out of that call as I asked for my number to be passed on!!! So anxious every time my phone rang, answered each call so fast, did wan to miss that opportunity. It did ring, so excited to not know anything really only information I got was a new student needing to learn fast, 4 months tops, love the challenge. You all now know him as Jake milkshake bully in Stranger Things 4!!! Rink-O-Mania was a good scene hand down. He came as a beginner skater, it was amazing to see the transition, we practiced the milkshake scene bunch of times. This really set his skills because he was able to skate at a moderate pace and stop, all hard work he put in himself, just with the right safe guidance. I got firsthand sight of the roller skates for set of course at the end I found out which show he would be on. Best kept secret, super cool to talk about all these opportunities given, especially from Netflix, forever grateful for all the nos.
Never doubt yourself, turn negatives into positives, I thought never in a million lol

Effie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Latina skate instructor/mom/host inclusive all wheel events. Creating safe space for POC, indigenous, and LGBTQ+ skaters. We offer private or group skater lessons as well as skate clinics. When we are not skating we are updating our website with new products, “but did it hurt”, t-shirts or roller skates. We provide income to Latin/POC individuals , with design opportunities and/or skate instructor opportunities.
What sets us apart from others, is our experience. I am proud to say I went to California and competed against 300 skaters and came back home to Orlando with a win, 2nd place street intermediate, for us at Eat_MySkates, this is a lifestyle for us, I have 15 plus years of skating experience from basic roller skating, roller derby, and now skate park.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Still a small business, no cofounder or partner.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
