We’ve always tried to ask the questions that matter but that are too awkward for people to ask their friends, family and coworkers without seeming dramatic. One of those questions is about mission and purpose – when’s the last time you asked a friend what their mission was? Too often we don’t talk about our own missions and don’t ask those close to us about theirs with the result being that our missions remain secret. Are you just a doctor or are you a doctor who wants to be there for patients in the way you wished your father’s doctor had been? People have incredible and meaningful missions, and we hope our conversations asking folks about their mission can inspire more such conversations in your life.

Fashion and style have always been a constant presence in my life. As a child, I’d see my grandmother dress in these incredible outfits, some of which she’d tailor to perfection with her sewing machine. She’d mix patterns, use the right colors to accentuate her best features, find ways to pay homage to our Mexican heritage, but the common thread was she’d always tell a story with what she’d wear. I remember thinking that I wanted to do exactly that – tell my story with clothes. Read more>>

My entrepreneurial journey began when I invented a product. Once I received my patent for my product then on to learning how to make an idea a reality. It has been a learning process in which I did fail with my first prototype, but I kept going. Eventually, I chose a different material to make my utensil and then it finally worked out well. However, in the process of becoming a business owner – I came to realize the percentage of woman inventors is very low and especially in Latina inventors with less than 1% obtaining US patents. 2016 was a life-changing year for me. I was suffering with GI issues and chose not to take medications. I made a decision to try a holistic way. I fell in love with working out, changed my lifestyle to plant-based and got healthy. After spending a great deal of time in the gym, I encountered unappealing odors around me. This, along with my background as a Physician Assistant specializing in Infectious diseases for the last 13+ years, motivated me to create a product as a preventative measure. Read more>>

I started my clothing line to memorialize two of my friends lost to Chicago gun violence. The name “La’Flare The Label” is dedicated to my friend ‘Von La’Flare” who was an aspiring rapper; and the Snake logo is in memory of my friend Blake “Snake.” I endured homelessness that started in my teens and my friends helped me along the way, so I want to bring them to the top with me, in spirit. CO/LAB Theater Group is a nonprofit organization that offers individuals with developmental disabilities a creative and social outlet through theater arts. At Syracuse University, where myself and the other co-founders went to school, there was a similar program there that we all participated in. We were all touched, moved, and excited by the collaborative nature of working with adults with developmental disabilities that when we moved to NYC, we wanted to find something just like it. After looking and asking, we couldn’t find any comprable organization and decided to create it ourselves! Read more>>

To me, music is more than just a series of random notes and pitches, organized together to make sound. And most people will probably agree with me. Music is dynamic and malleable. Sometimes, it rises to a climax and other times it falls to silence. It constantly changes in speed, volume, pitch, and timbre. The effect music has on our emotions is incredible. Music transports listeners from the heights of ecstasy to the depths of chaos, and everywhere in between. This is one of the reasons why we hear music every time we watch a movie. Read more>>

For 13 years, I worked at an antique bookstore in Baltimore. I loved it but although the shop had been in the same location for over 40 years, on a street that was once known as “Book Row,” by the time I started working there, the neighborhood had greatly changed and we only got a handful of walk-in customers a week, most of whom traveled from outside of Baltimore to visit the shop. Most people in Baltimore didn’t even know the shop existed. So the one thing that I always wished we did better was connecting with the community around us. Read more>>
