We were lucky to catch up with Brittni Livingston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittni, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
As much as I love my business, owning a small business is a struggle. Sure, you get to make your own hours, but when you’re growing a small business you wear many hats. I’m the copywriter, marketer, photographer, social media manager, and much more. That means if I let myself, I could work 24 hours a day. And if I make a bad call, I have no one to blame but myself. That said, when I do make a good call and see sales rolling in, there really isn’t any greater feeling. I love seeing my small business succeed and I find it very fulfilling.
Brittni, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I struggled with skin problems very early on. Like many teens, I was bullied for my cystic acne, and I fell into the vicious cycle of trying to cover it while making it worse. Over the years I was on a constant hunt for a solution, whether it be chemical peels or natural, homemade honey scrubs. When I went vegan, my options became even more limited in regard to both skincare and makeup.
When I was 22, newly vegan, and working at a tech job I hated, a few of my family members were starting up their Amazon businesses. I was still actively working on healing my skin and makeup had been a long-time passion, and the idea struck me to put together my own line. I set to work testing formulas and trying out different private-label brands until I discovered what I felt represented my ideals well.
Vegan, Organic Ingredients, Sulfate and Parabon free, and most of all, cosmetics that I actually used every day that improved my skin. The foundation I found is light and airy and feels like a second skin. The mascara I sell can help lengthen your lashes. The organic lipstick has oils to help heal cracked lips. Each product in my original line works to help your skin.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My entire life has been a side hustle. All my friends and family like to pick on me for my inability to have a hobby. If it’s something I’m interested in, I’ll figure out a way to make money with it. I loved makeup so I started selling it. I love to read, so I set a goal of 100 books a year and use that as content for Tiktok, which goes towards my creator fund payments. I learned a lot while creating my small business, especially in marketing and copywriting, so I now offer those skills to clients. I love being busy and with so many projects, it’s impossible to get bored!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
My makeup brand, EVXO Cosmetics, thrives off repeat customers. I do my best to ensure that customer inquiries and complaints are handled quickly and efficiently, and I also make sure to offer discounts to new and returning customers. I understand that $30 is a high price point for a lot of people, and I aim for EVXO to be as inclusive as possible.
