We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jay Fields a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I wanted to go professional as a model when I built confidence in myself. As a teenager, I found myself feeling insecure at times and doubting myself despite my dreams of being a model someday. However, I changed my attitude after some work and realized that this is the path for me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Jay Fields, a 22 year old model based in Houston, Texas. I specialize in Runway and commercial modeling but I am open to expanding and becoming more diverse. I started modeling at the beginning of 2022 and it has been an amazing experience. So far, I have done numerous photoshoots, walked in five fashion shows including Michael Kors and Macy’s, appeared on TV with Alan Gonzalez of Project Runway, and have appeared in two magazine articles.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew how many other local creators there are in my city. I had the mentality that I NEEDED to be discovered by an agent in a mall in order to become a model. But I realized I could take the initiative and contact photographers and other models in my area and network with people who were already in the industry. You are never alone as a creative. There’s always people willing to help and support you. That’s one thing I love about it!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, one of the most rewarding aspects is when I see a vision in my head of what I want the photos to come out like and they turn out exactly as I envisioned or better. It’s a great feeling to have. Another rewarding experience is when sometimes there’s trouble on the set and things don’t seem to go as planned but somehow despite everything that has gone wrong, you end up with a perfect result. I’ve had this experience before and all I could say was “WOW.” No one else would ever know what it took to get that perfect shot. All they see is the end result and that’s what makes me smile.
