We recently connected with Lil Gene and have shared our conversation below.
Lil Gene, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I knew I wanted to be an artist was in 8th grade. I always knew I wanted to be apart of music ever since I was a jit. I can remember like it was yesterday, I was performing a song in pre-school standing on top of building blocks that me and another kid made a stage out of. When I was in 8th grade, I remember making my first song ever using a webcam mic at my grandmas house.
Eugene, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
If you don’t know me, my name is Lil Gene. I’m from Champaign, IL. I was born in Chicago, IL. I just turned 26 on December 13th. I got into music when I was jit, I always knew I wanted to be an artist all my life it feels like. I wasn’t a big sports guy even though I tried to play basketball in 6th-8th grade and tried to play football my freshman year of high school. When we had our first game, I didn’t come back for the next one. I knew then football wasn’t for me and started taking my music more serious. What sets me apart from others in the music industry is that I am very versatile. I can go from talking about the streets to talking about relationship problems or goals. I’m not your ordinary artist, I listen to all types of music that is out in the world. Sometimes I just like to listen to the radio to see and listen to the types of music that people like hearing today to interpret that with my own sound. I’m proud of being able to wake up everyday and not dead or in jail. My close friend more like a brother to me just got sentenced to 8 years, and I lost my homie Trent a week after my birthday in 2021. I want all my new fans to check out all of my music to see how I advanced over the years. Start by listening to my music on SoundCloud, then go to Spinrilla, then Apple Music & YouTube. All you have to do is search my name “Lil Gene”.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew more about the music industry business then than I do now.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What keeps me going is knowing I have to make sure my family is straight and put my mom and grandma (her mom) in a big house with no more worries in life.
