We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bryant Fleming a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bryant, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I have made projects before this upcoming one, but that was in a different name. But it would have to be my old self-titled album, which had a lot of vulnerability in it, and truth. I first started that project in the middle of covid, 2021 to be exact. After I just finished another project called Escape. And for this album I wanted to be open about who I am as a person, and also it was the year I officially came out to my parents, and a lot of love came out of that. But keeping my sexuality a secret, my hidden lies, started to fly as well, causing a little nudge in my life at that point. So, the album became a story, me also getting into my spiritual journey, and what it was like being 17 for me. But this new album I am in the process of is going to be bigger than anything I ever done. Alot has happened to me in college, especially this year, with me getting diagnosed with Anxiety, and struggling with that. Is going to be an emotional rollercoaster but a good one.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Bryant Fleming, but I got by BRYANT. I am 2-nd year student at University of the Arts with a Major in Musical Theatre, and minor in Songwriting. I am a singer-songwriter, actor, dancer, musician, and choreographer. I grew up in Philadelphia, aka Philly with a dad as a pastor and a mom as the first lady. Religion has been a big part of me, it is a part of who I am. What I do in the world as a follower in my religion, and who I am meant to be. Some of my music inspiration is, WHITNEY HOUSTON, AND ARIANA GRANDE for technique of the voice, and harmony, how to use it in the healthiest way possible. MICHAEL JACKSON AND BEYONCE is for dance, choreography, stage presence, how to make music, using different sounds, and instrumentation, to gain a broader audience. I am also a twin. I got into the music industry, when I was younger, started writing songs, in 7th grade, and ever since been invested in the music industry. I started doing Musical Theatre in high school, which really picked my interest, I get to sing, act, and dance, all in one. So, it drawn to me, but writing songs, and albums will always be #1. I provide r&b music, gospel, and pop. With my music, I want each person to gain a piece of me, and me a piece of you. We are 1 in my music, everyone is welcome, I am an open arm waiting to cover as many souls as possible, and people has I can. I make music for everyone, who can relate to what I am going through, and what they are going through. What sets me apart, is I don’t music for the money, or the fame, I do it for therapy, not just for me, but millions of others, who can’t talk about what they are feeling, but sing what they are feeling, listening to what I am feeling. I am proud of my growth, I grow each day, make new music each day, I fall down but get back up with the help of God, my family, friends, and fans. I am for everyone, in my music, we are all creators. I called my fanbase creators, because we all make music, we all create, your inspiration, helps me, and vice versa. We create even when we are not creating.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can start by accepting that artists are humans, not machines. We have feelings, we make mistakes, we have our ups and downs, but it’s doesn’t give you the right to judge us, for our actions. We chose this career field because we want to make music, to those who feel like they are lost, or no one understands them. We create music because it heals us, as artists and creatives. We don’t just do it for the fame and the money. *well most of us*. We do it because we want to help our loved ones. Or to make sure we don’t end up dead somewhere. So support us in our endeavors as artists.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew about, promoting your music. It is so hard as an independent artist, to put their music out there without a label helping them. I hope one day I can be apart of a label, that understands me as a human, and an artist. But promoting, I wish someone told me that it was hard. That you can’t trust everyone who you submit music too. That your bank account goes empty so fast, just so you can get your voice heard. And it’s mentally draining, knowing all the doubts, the worries, the fears, if your music is even out there, or if someone is taking your music, or if someone is listening.
