Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Phase Meridian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Phase, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects we’ve worked on was definitely our first full length album titled “Grow. Decay. Transform.” It was a huge culmination of years of work together and the beginning of am amazing relationship with our producer, Erik Lamp of Treespeak Studios.
Some of the songs that appeared on that album were among the first we had ever written together and were nearly a decade old by the time the album came out! It was really time to release them into the world, if only so we could move on and finally work on something fresh and new.
We learned so much from this project. We became better song writers, honed our knowledge and skills about the recording process, and discovered a lot about how well we work when we really push ourselves.
While we believe the newer material we are working on is a huge step up from Grow. Decay. Transform., we are still incredibly proud of what we made together.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
We are a three-piece progressive metal band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. We consist of Kevin Shermock on drums, Jake Spanier on bass, and Joe McCumber on guitar. Something that we feel is really interesting and unique about us is that we all perform vocals. Sometimes we’ll sing together doing harmonies or tandem death growls/screams, other times it will be a single voice. It was a situation that came about by happenstance, but we have really owned it and made it a part of our identity as a musical group.
We rehearse regularly and all practice quite a lot, which has made us into a really tight and engaging live band. The best compliment we feel we can get after a live performance is “You guys were great. You looked like you were having so much fun!” Because we are!
Something we are really proud of is that we haven’t changed members in our entire 11 year tenure together. We have all grown and changed and embraced that, but we’ve stuck together and pushed ourselves to be better musicians and people along the way.
Have you ever had to pivot?
We recently came to the difficult decision to change the name of our band. We’ve been together for over 10 years now, and maintained the monicker “Redshift (also stylized RED\\SHIFT for a time) for the vast majority of that time.
After releasing our first full length album “Grow. Decay. Transform.”, we found that the name we had chosen almost a decade previously was a very commonly taken one in our genre. There were more than a dozen bands under the same name on Spotify alone!
This made us difficult to find in an already saturated market. Thus, the name change. We deliberated for days, kicking ideas back and forth.
We finally landed on Phase Meridian. Our good friend Nick Peters then created a logo for us and onward we have gone. The name and logo have been remarkably well received and we’re so happy we took the risk.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our main goal is to create things that are personally satisfying to us and to share them with the world.
The secondary goal to that is to find like minded people through our art and to create connections with them. We love meeting fellow musicians, artists, and creatives with similar mindsets and aspirations.
