Brooke, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?

How we got started and why we do what we do.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

Kb Pure Essentials was founded by long time best friends, Katie Moodie and Brooke Brun in 2013. Katie draws from her background in psychology and her passion for all things natural and organic to formulate and produce KB Essentials’ hand-crafted line of CBD products. Brooke is a Northern California native with a background in the Human Resources industry. She uses her background in business to come up with creative and innovative ways to grow Kb Pure Essentials.

Katie started out developing natural remedies for her family, friends, and colleagues. She teamed up with Brooke, to launch Kb Pure Essentials. Initially, the company focused mainly on crafting natural health and wellness products. Katie was (and still is) fascinated about the health benefits of the cannabis plant and worked with Brooke to develop a CBD product that harnesses these benefits. Today, these CBD-infused products are the cornerstone of Kb Pure Essentials.

Brooke’s experience with natural products and their health benefits was exploratory at first. She started using essential oils to help alleviate symptoms of seizures, chronic depression, anxiety, and fatigue. After experiencing improvements in her own life, she worked Katie to create their own line of branded products. As she dug deeper into all things natural, she and Katie discovered CBD and personally experienced its healing benefits. The improvement in Brooke’s quality of life was so dramatic that the pair were compelled to make CBD-infused products the foundation of their business.

Katie loves spending time with her friends and family cultivating relationships and wellness at every opportunity. As a single mother, she prides herself on creating a healthy environment for her son- Atom- to thrive. They especially love to visit the beaches of San Diego for surfing in the summertime and snow-capped mountains for snowboarding in the winter. Traveling with her son is a priority, and they both love to go on adventures whenever life allows!

Brooke now enjoys gardening and going on road trips with her husband and three dogs. Her dream is to inspire others with her journey in natural wellness. To one day have a family and share her story with them is a big motivator to keep moving forward when times are tough. Also, hearing the positive feedback from her loyal customers brightens each new day and keeps reminding her WHY she loves doing what she does!

While CBD and Kb Pure Essentials’ role in the industry has changed over the years, the foundational and long term success comes from the deep relationships both with those within the company and with all those the brand draws into their lives. We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.

We always like to start this story off by saying we met on Craigslist! But that is actually how we met.

Katie was renting a room in her home and placed an ad on Craigslist. Brooke was transitioning out of a long term relationship and needed a place to live. They hit it off pretty immediately, and both walked away from the meeting hoping they would soon be roommates.

Shortly after moving in, Katie announced she was pregnant, and their friendship grew closer over the next several months. After Brooke moved out, the friendship grew even tighter and when they decided to start Kb Pure Essentials, Brooke quit her job, sold her condo and moved back in with Katie for another 5 years while they grew the business.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?

We do manufacture our own products.

Manufacturing our products started from necessity. When we started our brand, CBD wasn’t an industry. We had to find someone in Colorado who was willing to ship us pounds of Hemp flower and we did a simple alcohol extraction in a crock pot at our home. We then infused the extract into product formulas we were already making like lotions, creams and skin care products.

About 2 years after rebranding fully to hemp CBD, the extract was starting to become produced by large, regulated companies, and their product was more consistent and clean. This made our manufacturing much more efficient. We had also been networking in the cannabis community and met several scientists that have helped us improve our formulations to more therapeutic and consistent.

In 2019, we started our own Custom Formulation and Manufacturing company, K&B Labs. This has allowed us to expand beyond the CBD industry and we now develop a wide variety of wellness, skin care, personal care & hygiene and pet health products. Our lab is now located in a 600,000 sq.ft. GMP certified facility in San Diego, CA. We specialize in custom formulations and helping new brands get started, or assisting larger companies with developing novel products to add to their existing line. So whether you need 100 units or 100,000 units…we can do that!
