We were lucky to catch up with Kellie Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kellie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client was my grandmother, Gwendolyn Addison. After doing her brows I was given unlimited promo. She was an active member in the community before her recent passing, and the sight of her brows became new referrals. I would always make sure her car was stocked with business cards and pamphlets.
Kellie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My names is Kellie Smith, I am the owner of K’Lux Beauty Studio established 2017. I specialize in Cosmetic Tattooing e.i Brows, Lip Blush and Scalp Micropigmentation.
Having an artistic background dating back to my adolescent years, I has always had a love for beauty, art and fashion.
I took on the world of PMU as a part-time hobby, while working for the Federal Government. Little did I know, the world of PMU would allow me to leave my 9 to 5 and make my hobby a tull-time lucrative business.
I have served over 1,000+ satistied clients and instructed over 50+ students.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my clientele by reaching out to influencers from my town. I would offer them a free service in exchange for a repost. Some I would pay a flat fee for them to post my work. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to grow your audience. I service women and men in different industries. Many who travel and get stopped and asked about their services provided by me. I make sure my clients have a good experience, so they are happy to advertise for me. Doing so, I have gained followers/clients in different states who travel to see me here in Maryland.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started my business in 2017 while working for the Federal Government. It started as my part-time hobby. I would take a few clients in the evenings after getting off from my full time job. My clientele started to grow and before I knew it I began to see my bi-weekly salary from the government in one Saturday of working on my part time hobby. I did this for 1 year so I could capture my quarterly totals before making a final decision to resign from the Federal Government.
