Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angela Farris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
One Valentine’s it iced and snowed all night the day before the big day. Fearful of what to expect for the day, I left home at 4 AM. There was already 10 inches of snow. As I drove, powerlines were snapping from the weight of the ice and snow, sparking as they hit the ground. Our team of experienced drivers, who were expected to arrive at 7:00 am to load the arrangements, one by one called to say they could not make it in. I did not know what I was going to do to ensure we kept our promise to all of our customers who had trusted us to deliver flowers to their Valentine’s. At 8 AM, a customer called to say her husband and children were coming to help us deliver. What a blessing. And the children all have very blonde hair and with the snow, our customers called all day to ask who the angels were who delivered their flowers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My love for flowers started early. I had a garden from the time I was 5. My mom would take me to the nursery to pick a few plants or seeds each season. She said when I was a toddler, I would pick flowers and bring them to her.
I am intrigued with how flowers grow and my love for gardening has allowed me to understand what the cut flowers need to survive.
At Lane Florist, our goal is always to have fresh product arrive daily to allow the customer to have a complete experience with the flower. With new varieties available each year, the arrangements are constantly changing.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think all businesses have a story of resilience over the last few years. Because our products are primarily shipped from overseas, the impact of a pandemic brought a new understanding for how much we rely on other people and the impact this had on everyone all over the world. For our industry, it was difficult to hear how product; which did not make flights due to lack of personnel to work the fields or no room in cargo planes, was being destroyed at alarming rates. Stories of millions of stems having to be burned each week. Farms whose families had worked the fields their who lives were being closed or sold.
For Lane Florist, events were cancelling, special order flowers were not arriving on time or in some cases not at all. We chose to stay open to support our customers and their families; whose only contact, in many cases, was a weekly flower arrangement placed at the door step. Navigating these difficulties also involved keeping our employees and customers safe. This was of paramount importance.
Our team pulled together and worked to ensure we kept our spirits up and our workplace free of contaminants so that we could be of service to the community.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for us is a referral. Dallas has so many wonderful florists and with social media, customers are able to see arrangements and flowers daily. We are always honored when an existing customer refers a friend or a business to us.
