We were lucky to catch up with Jaslyn Biebl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jaslyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Makeup photography isn’t exactly what it used to be. With the ever-growing presence of photographers online, trying to stand out can be quite the challenge. Online platforms, such as Instagram, have become increasingly popular as time goes on.
When I first started my Instagram journey back in 2019, I didn’t expect an audience or growth. In fact, I was just posting about my makeup collection! I was a college student taking pictures in my basement for free entertainment. Little did I know that makeup photography would become a full-blown hobby for me. I made very valuable connections within my community of fellow makeup photographers, too. Inspired by the many talented people on Instagram, I continued posting. I am very thankful for everyone who has supported my hobby, especially those who have stuck around since the beginning.
To this day, I still post pictures of my makeup collection. I like to challenge myself and find different ways of styling products to post for my audience. Though I wish I could have started my page earlier, I am glad I created my account when I did. I had the passion, the drive, and the motivation it took to stay consistent. I don’t know if I would have had that kind of motivation if I created my page earlier in life.
However, if I would have started my Instagram later in life, I would most definitely be overwhelmed. Many individuals aspire to gain a following and get recognized online. It can be quite challenging, especially when there are hundreds of thousands of other creators out there. Sometimes I still struggle trying to find what separates me from the rest of those creators. I’m thankful for the community I have now, since they have given me so much support, even after my hiatus. Without the community I built in 2019, I would not have the same motivation for continuing my hobby.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Jaslyn Biebl aka Jazz from Pan.o.ramics. I am a digital creator online, specializing in makeup photography.
Panning is a very niche branch of the Makeup and Beauty segment on Instagram. Most “panners” post their progress to motivate themselves to buy less, and use more. With that being said, I created my Instagram page back in 2019 with one goal in mind: show the world my own progress.
Especially in today’s world of consumerism, it’s easy to fall for all of the sales beauty brands have to offer. Unfortunately, as a makeup lover, I found myself buying more products than anyone could ever need.
After some not-so-successful attempts at trying to get through my collection, I found that doing makeup flatlay photography really helped spark my interest in using what I have. Purely enjoying the content I was making was not only enhancing my hobby, but it was also allowing me connect and grow with my community.
I aspire to be an inspiration to those who want to enjoy their content while also using what they have. It’s important to have fun while maintaining your goals. For me, photography has always been that escape from reality, allowing me to journal the things I love about all things beauty.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I do have a mission in mind that is driving my creative journey. Back in 2019, I would have told you that I just wanted to use what I have, which isn’t necessarily a bad goal. But now, I want to use what I have while also finding new ways to create professional content.
I have always loved photography, even as a child. As I matured, I mixed my passion for makeup content with my passion for photography. With those two motivators, I created my Instagram to show the world both my progress and my collection in a satisfying, professional way.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is putting my own personal flare on things. I love being able to make my own flatlays! Showcasing what I have in many different styles and aesthetics is something that I have always found entertaining.
Along with that, the community has also been very rewarding. I have made a lot of valuable connections and friends online who share the same passions and hobbies. To this day, I still do my best to reach out and help fellow creators do what they love!
