We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mikayla McCarthy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mikayla below.
Mikayla , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
Someone that as mentored me, being an entrepreneur, was a lady that I met when I was 19 and she was so amazing. She taught me that be naturally good at what you are doing will cause at of commotion good and bad. To except either, because that means you are doing something right.
Mikayla , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The discipline that I’ve learned during my career as a dancer, is I follow my intuition a lot for the most part. I know that if I need to take a self care I day I will. Sometimes my body or my mind will not be in the right spot to keep going. Although I know that I need to work I make sure that my mental and physical health comes first. My industry is really mentally and physically draining but also so rewarding so I find a balance to maintain my schedule to have a lot of growth but also to take care of myself the best I can so I can continue to be my own boss. I know that my mind can play tricks on me because I do make my own schedule and can take it for granite but then I try to remind myself how grateful I am to make the amount I do so much. I also try to not put the money that I make in a personal perspective of myself. I don’t want to make myself feel as if, “if I make this much this is my value” or “if make less that’s how much I worth”. Just because you aren’t making what you want doesn’t mean you are any less value as a person. You are the same value no matter how much to make.I provide many things in my industry such as an experience of fantasy. Problems that’s I solve with clients are money negotiations and lack of boundaries. Due to my industry it can be very draining trying to with hold your standards no matter what the cost is. Your morals are so much more than money.. Something that set me apart from others is I’m very adaptable to any environment that I’m in. It’s easy for me to fit in any place. I can get along and mirror many clients which really works to my favors also I’m very good at performing.I’m most proud of my self confidence and not letting anything effect me personally when you are always working with an audience sometimes it can be tough but not taking anything personal it such a key to success. Obviously we all have our bad days but most days it’s easy to flip the negatives to positives.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The time where I had the biggest pivot in my career. I was genuinely thinking about suicide during Covid. I’ve had very bad depression ruin deep in my family. I really just travelled during that time alone of course, but I met up with an old friend I had who was in the same industry as me and seen how far she had come. Honestly she probably saved my life that day. Nobody really knew what was going on with me. We ended up going to dinner and she rooms me on a private jet and she was only nineteen and I was shocked knowing that I could actually get to a place like her with that type of wealth really change my perspective.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
People who live different life’s as someone who works and knows exactly what you are going to make for that year or even weekly. It’s very difficult to understand the importance of self discipline to know that your work is based off of self discipline and determination. Working in my industry takes a lot of high energy not like high energy where you drink a caffeine and you have that type of rush. No. The energy from you as human. So it’s very important to take care of yourself in this industry so you can keep going.
