We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johnny Canizales a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Johnny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Well. when I first started out, I actually taught myself. Which is crazy to think about, because I used to stay up until 5 am just learning new editing tricks, how to control a camera, photography, and basically everything in between. Knowing, what I know now, is that you can’t force the creative process, you just have to let it flow naturally. I learned that from a great director, Gino Berrios. I worked with him and instantly fell in love with filmmaking. It was a whole different process than just creating content for social media. I sort of transitioned from social media content to filmmaking and directing. I think the skills that are most essential in this industry or any other industry, is just making connections. Learning how to talk to people and just asking questions about everything. I just enjoy learning from everybody I meet because I’m so passionate about this, that I hope I never stop learning.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well I love the creative process. The fact that you can turn an idea into something that people can resonate with, is a beautiful thing. You can bring happiness through photography, videography, and most importantly, with storytelling. Seeing my clients faces with excitement and happiness when they see how the photos came out, or how the video came out brings a smile to my face, and it makes me just fall in love with the craft even more. I provide so many services. I wanted to become so versatile in the creative industry, so from photography, to videography, editing, directing, producing. I’ve worked with so many amazing brands, and so many wonderful, creative people. I am most proud of evolving within the creative space, getting to work with amazing people, and just having fun along the way. I would love people to know that I genuinely love what I do. Every moment I’m creating something, whether it’s photography or directing, I always have the biggest smile on my face, because there’s no where in the world I’d rather be, than in that moment. doing what I have so much passion for.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is to just be able to make art or create something new. The fact that I have the ability to choose what I can create next , or the fact that I can work with amazing creative people on a new project is rewarding to me as well. I enjoy every second of it. It doesn’t matter to me how many people see a project or how far a certain project goes, I had the time of my life creating it and working on it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal for me on this creative journey is to never stop learning. I always want to be better than I was yesterday, so I try to learn new things everyday and apply it to my craft. Hopefully, one day I could inspire somebody, the same way so many people have inspired me on this journey.
