We were lucky to catch up with Tommy Hulihan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tommy, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
In training and running youth programs, I think one of the keys to success is humility and putting in the time To succeed as a trainer and coach, you need to be humble enough to realize you don’t know everything. I’ve been training players from grade school up to professional players for over 25 years and I still enjoy reading books and attending multiple coaching clinics a year. Seeking out and developing relationships with some of the top coaches and trainers in the country has helped me grow exponentially professionally as well as personally.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
While in high school a family friend ask me to train his son and get better at shooting. I did it a few times and couldn’t believe someone would be willing to pay me for doing something I loved. Fast forward several years I have now been running youth camps and training players for over 25 years, while being a full-time PE teacher and basketball coach at St. Paul’s Catholic School. I am so grateful for all the players that have trusted and allowed me to be a part of their basketball journey. I offer summer and Christmas sports camps as well as basketball-specific training. The sports camps are for any kids 5 years old through 5th grade who would like to stay active and have fun. For basketball, I offer private and monthly group training throughout the year for various age groups. We also offer a summer and winter recreational basketball league (Beaches Basketball League) for ages 3 years old through 5th grade.
One of the things I am proudest of is offering a safe and affordable place for kids to spend their summer while having a great time. I have the best staff, who truly cares for the kids. Specifically, Tyler Dillon, (AD and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Beaches Chapel School) and Corey Durden (Technology Teacher/MS Girl’s Basketball Coach at St Pauls/Head Girl’s Varsity Coach @ Beaches Chapel) have been with me for over 10 years and are a huge part of my success. I would not be as successful as I am without such great people working for me.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have found that word of mouth is the best form of advertising. For the camps and youth league, if the kids are having fun and the parents are happy, they tell their friends. For the training, it’s as simple as results. When you can help a player improve their game, and they notice a difference, they will come back.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Overall, I pride myself on be honest, professional and trustworthy. Basically, I treat others the way I would want to be treated.
