We recently connected with Kayman Mitchell and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Kayman thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?

I would focus on the business side first. I took 12 years to obtain full knowledge of how to make money off of my music and brand. I would have not invested so much time in things that i thought where getting me steps ahead. I would’ve still showed the love i showed but knowing what i know now, I’d cut dead weight long time ago too. The steps I’d take now would’ve been more strategic and not so random. Mostly invest more into marketing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’ve always rapped, use to win freestyle battles at school, connect karaoke machines together and rap over songs and record them on tapes. Started taking it serious in 2011 started as a fan honestly, I went to prison right when the Dallas Boogie movement was hot. I came home in 2009 and I was on a label that helped me with marketing and promo. By 2011-12 I was on Team Star City (label mates of Star City Mr.Lucci, Classik Mussik, and Stubb-A-Lean). During all this, I became a club promoter and booked my own acts for my colleagues and label mates. I’ve booked over 700 artists throughout the DFW Metroplex; was a club promoter for 7 years, Co-Owner of the club for 3 year, and manager for the club 4 years. It all started here and here I am now. My work is a refelction of my life and where I am going. I have managed over ten artists. I started my clothing line (Solid Investment Pride) in 2014. I’ve brought in or been on promo teams that brought in big-name acts like Ralo, Young Dolph, Lil Flip, Lil Keke, Lil Boosie’s artist, Irene The Dream, Mindless Behavior, Cashout, Gucci Mane, and list goes on. I’ve taking over 60 artists on tours throughout Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana. Nowadays I’m just making good music and trying to stamp this SOLID INVESTMENT MOVEMENT. I got the streets screaming solid check the dates. I’m currently re-inventing myself and only managing 4 artists, 1 producer, and a model. I released King Solid Vol.1 ,King Solid Vol.2,King Solid Vol.3, and King Solid Vol. 3.5 featuring Multiple up and coming artist.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?

Ok ok a really don’t share this story often but, In 1998 July the 11th, I was involved in a car accident that left my best friend dead and myself paralyzed and unconscious. I was care flighted to Parkland Hospital and treated for injures. Was then told I’d never walk again. Was then told it would take 8 months to 2yrs. I was enrolled in Aquatics and 3months later i was told i could go home. There’s more to the story but the moral of it is.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?

I’d suggest excellent communication, emotional mature people around u, trainable people as well. People with morale, principles and a sense of solidarity.
