We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adam Asdel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adam below.
Adam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I were to start from square one there’s a few things I would do differently, however one in particular stands out to me. My industry is known for the gear and equipment. Every year there are new and fancy cameras, lenses, lights etc. and I used to get so caught up in thinking I had to have it all in order to create the work I had envisioned. While it is true that all of those things can be necessary, it doesn’t mean you can’t tell your story without them. In hindsight I would have spent less time and money focused on the gear and more time on the stories I wanted to tell.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into my industry completely by accident. I was working for Verizon at the time and was making music during my free time. I bought a camera in hopes to shoot my own music videos. I had experience filming since I was a kid when my friends and I would make our own skateboard and ski videos. After buying my first camera I immediately became hooked on taking photos and found myself on adventures chasing sunrises and landscapes all around my area. Eventually I found myself offering to shoot portraits, weddings or anything I could get my hands on. I started making money from shooting videos and photos for all sorts of things to the point it allowed me to quit my day job and go out and freelance. I now specialize in commercial cinematography and have traveled the world working on TV shows, commercials and more!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe what helped me the most was my willingness to talk to as many people as possible and learn from everyone I meet. I still try my best to connect with new people weekly and approach every experience as a new opportunity.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want the people who see my work to be inspired to go out and create or adventure for them selves!
