Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Catherine Serra. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Catherine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I quit my job (restaurant business) while I was pregnant with my third child and then shortly after having him I got pregnant again and really wanted a way I could help provide financially for my family. I have always loved creating things and so my husband and I just prayed that I’d be able to find something I could do at home, not really even having any type of direction. Fast forward a few months, I made cute little cupcakes for a friend’s baby shower at church. A few friends said I could sell them they were so cute, and around the same time another friend had a dream I had a bakery. Halfway joking around I created a Facebook business page and just started watching YouTube videos to teach myself and then I’d bake stuff and post pictures. Before I knew It, I got my first order, and then another, and another… and the rest is history.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a home baker, I specialize mostly in custom sugar cookies, cakes, cupcakes, cakepops, and macarons. I am completely self taught and I’d definitely say I’m most proud of my sugar cookies. I spent a lot of time perfecting the recipe, and I think they speak for themselves. I don’t think I’m the most talented decorator around, but I am consistent and easy to work with. I love what I do, I love people, and I love making people happy. I take pride in my work and it’s always been more than just a job to me.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I’ve been very blessed from the very beginning finding clients. At first my clientele was primarily people I knew. That grew from word of mouth, to word of mouth, and now I’d say 70% of my business Is from people I do not know.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
In March of 2020, when the pandemic came to be, I had all of these large orders cancel at once because of social distancing and the world shutting down. I freaked out a little, wondering how I was going to stay in business when people weren’t celebrating together anymore. Because of the whole toilet paper craze at the same time, I decided to market small personal sized cakes that looked like toilet paper and offered them for “porch pick up” in my new social distance area I created They sold like hot cakes. I couldn’t keep up! That turned into people wanting all sorts of treats to get through the quarantine days with. Some for themselves, and some to cheer other people up. Here when I thought I was doomed because parties were cancelled, I probably had more business.
