Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tonya Thomspon and Sharie Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tonya and Sharie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
We’re not just a haircare company, my sister Sharie and I are actually two hairstylists that are deeply involved with Black hair care and creating products to help Black women—achieve the results. DreamGirls Hair began because I was sick of the stereotypes of people saying that if you wore braids or weaves, that you were what they considered a chicken head or bald headed or that you didn’t have any hair. So, my sister and I created our Healthy Hair program to help Black women achieve hair growth results and debunk this stereotype about Black hair care. Our mission is to further educate our consumers and our clients on hair care problems and solutions to help them achieve results, and our passion for hair extends beyond the salon chair.
Tonya and Sharie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My sister Sharie and I have always had a passion for hair. We began doing hair out of our parents garage here in Los Angeles , and did hair for many of our friends for school dances and proms. We both ended up venturing in to the corporate world after college but our passion brought us back to hair. We opened our first salon in 2006 and our second salon location in Los Angeles in 2008. The mission of our salon from day one has always been to help Black women achieve their hair goals and debunk the sterotype that Black women can’t have long healthy hair. We we didn’t realize we were doing something that was so different from everyone else, until we started posting about our Healthy Hair Program on social media. We have since travled across the U.S providing our hair services to women all over to help them achieve their hair goals. Prior to the pandemic we were getting ready to launch our 5 step hair care line called the Healthy Hair Care System to help women achieve their hair goals no matter where they lived. despite the pandemic we hit 2.5 million in sales within our first year. What sets us apart from other is we’re two African-American women that made a product for African-American women that have actually had our hands in African-American hair of all textures. It doesn’t matter if you’re mixed or whatever, our hands have touched somebody’s hair like yours. So, I think that’s the difference. We’re not just a celebrity that’s putting our name on a bottle. We’re not just somebody who’s saying, “Oh, you know what, I’m about to make a product for curly hair because there’s no products out there. We’re two sisters that made a product for every woman with textured hair because our hands have been in all textures and continue to be in all textures. This is what we do and that’s the difference. When we decided to name our products, we wanted to be very intentional about that. Why? The reason why is because when you go to different stores and you pick up products for African-American people, what you typically see is words like, unruly, uncontrolled, and rough. Just the names alone don’t give you hope. It just makes you feel like, I’m dealing with something that’s like a disease, you know? Also, we wanted to make sure when we named our products that not only do we speak life into the products, but we speak life into the people who use the products, too. Our people are always faced with negative images when it comes to our hair. We wanted to make sure that we name things that speak life into our hair. And, so we have our TLC (Tender Loving Care) Comb-Out Treatment and you’ve gotta do TLC when you comb out your hair. And, then our shampoo is called Renewing. You know, let’s renew that scalp. Let’s get that scalp clean. And, then we also have the Renewing Conditioner. We also have the Revival Deep Treatment. Everything we do is about educating our consumers and our clients.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We have visible results to show for and the results of our clients speaks for itself. Many people and brands say that they can help you grow your hair but we actually do in addition to helping clients maintain the health of their hair through our Healthy Hair Care System product line.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being transparent and showing them what we can do instead of just telling them what we do.
