We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matt Kasee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Trilogy Fitness Systems was started after a couple of career idea shifts in grad school. I was working as a personal trainer and realized a big gap in the fitness world. Fitness has historically been very exclusionary and not the most welcoming environment. I wanted to change that and create a truly welcoming and fun space. Trilogy exists so that people can build themselves up and in turn build those around them up in a fun and supportive environment.
Matt, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up, I was always a nerdy kid, and I found some confidence through strength training and fitness. After a hand injury in grade school, I decided early on to be a physical therapist, but during undergrad, I realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do and went to grad school to study sports and exercise psychology. Grad school allowed me to learn under some of the best coaches in the country, experience elite athletes’ training, and work in several settings in the fitness industry. I took all the lessons and built a place that brought very high-level training and a fun environment to people who have typically been left out of traditional fitness.
We have created an environment with a tight-knit community that truly allows people to grow and have fun.
I am most proud of the community and people inside Trilogy Fitness Systems. We have a fun, genuine, and giving group of people inside our walls. We get to work hard in the gym and make fun progress, but as a whole, we get to have fun, give back to the community and support each other inside and outside the gym.
Inside the gym, we focus on small-group personal training. We get to combine the social aspect of group training to develop a fun and supportive community with the individualization of personal training. It allows us to get the best of both worlds and maximize the gym progress and the community. We firmly believe that when people have a robust support system, bring some fun into their routine and combine it with high-level training…people can become invincible. The fun community and training allow us to have highly consistent clients who enjoy coming to the gym.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Our reputation has been built and supported over years and years of work. I have been training since 2010, and Trilogy Fitness Systems has been a brick and mortar location since 2014. It takes a lot of consistency and remaining true to the values that you set with those around you.
We stay true to our values and mission statement, which have been developed and evolving because of the people inside Trilogy- employees and gym members. We do our best to support our gym members and show up for them at every chance we can. Luckily, this has helped to shape an equally supportive membership base.
Having such long-term members and “fans” of our work is what pushes and helps our reputation stay consistent and strong. It would nothing without our members helping us spread the word and helping us shape our actions and growth.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth has been our best strategy for growth. We have experimented with different forms of marketing and have had mixed results, but the best and most consistent client generation has been through our word of mouth. Referrals from our current members also allow us to shape the community. They are the best leads, fit the best with our culture, and tend to be the most consistent long term members as well.
