We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kai Casey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kai, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew that I wanted to be in music when I watched Linkin Park perform on my tv when I was 10 in my parents house. Seeing how the band was interacting with the crowd and watching how people were so in awe of what they were doing wanted to push me to learn music
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So my name is Kai Casey aka Uncle Kizzy
I’m a producer/artist/guitarist and content creator, and I make beats/instrumentals and I make flips/mashups. I started getting into music by learning how to play guitar at 10 years old and being immersed by the music that was played in my house, everything from Erykah Badu to Dave Matthew’s Band.
I think what sets me apart from other creatives is that I’m always lookin to push the envelope in my music and look for new ways to do something that’s already been done. My individuality as a creative has always been so important to me, so I try to evoke that mindset in everything I do.
I’m most proud of my persistence in music and never giving up on it, because even when it seems like I can’t create something, it comes to me in minutes.
Something my followers/fans should know about me is that I have autism, which further separates me from my peers in music. I was diagnosed when I was 14 with aspergers, and it helped me form such a deep love and connection with music, having perfect pitch and being extremely into different subgenres of music. I’ve learned to love it and boast about it because it makes me so different.
My music takes inspiration from literally anything. I grew up listening to neo-soul, hip hop, and r&b but as I started finding my own taste, I took from indie rock, alternative, jazz, folk, blues, and more. My goal in music is to make the impossible possible. I want to able to create different spaces and experiences for artists and creatives that puts them out of their comfort zone and into a new one.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding thing about being creative is the feeling you get when you know your work is fire. I just recently came to this realization this year when I was lookin back at my older work and then working on my own self-confidence in other areas, and it makes me feel like I can really do whatever I please and do it well.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I honestly wish I knew that all producing took was a Mac and an interface, because I would’ve started producing in high school
