We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Albion Sabani a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Albion, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
AV Films is a great play on 2 major concepts. Everyone is familiar with the terms Audio and Video being represented as AV. And although I run a video production company that produces marketing films, the AV stands for something else. It’s actually the initials of mine and my wife’s names: Albi + Vanessa. Since we started the company together, it only made sense. So it’s very near and dear to my heart!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a storyteller at heart. That’s what landed me in Hollywood working in the film industry. Organically, I picked up a camera so I could control more of my fate and fell in love with the filming and editing process. I like to give people experiences. I like to reframe their minds and help them see things from a new perspective. I now produce marketing films and promos for a variety of businesses and industries. Whichever problem your business is having at the moment, video can help solve it.

We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
As previously mentioned, my business partner / co-founder is my wife. So I guess this story goes back to when we first met – in 9th grade. I had just transferred from private school back to public and was nervous about having to make new friends again.
During the summer I had gotten a hold of the public schools yearbook and remembered the majority of my grade school friends I had left behind in public school. But when I came across a new stranger, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her. Cut to the first day of public school, 9th grade cafeteria; I’m seated with some people I remembered a few years earlier, but still overwhelmed by all the students. When suddenly I looked up, and it really is true what they say, time does stand still when you meet ‘the one.’’
There she was, same long wavy hair I remember from the yearbook, and now just a few tables away. I had to get closer. So over the next few days I worked the room and the tables until I got an introduction from a mutual friend, and the rest was history. Here we are 20 years later, 3 children, a dog, a video production company, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Just the importance of organization in a business.
Wish I would’ve used a CRM sooner.
Wish I would’ve set aside more money for my own marketing.
Wish I would’ve hired a business coach sooner.
And most Importantly, wish I would’ve just focused on mastering the fundamentals of my craft rather than try to add all the bells and whistles.
MJ and Kobe became the best and won championships by mastering the fundamentals, not doing 360 slam Dunks.
