We were lucky to catch up with Rahmar Duffy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rahmar , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Wow, without a doubt I wish I would’ve began waaay earlier. Funny enough whenever I see those, “What would you tell your younger self?” post’s my answer is always the same- “Start DJ’ing now!” My official journey as a DJ started around 2016 however, I think was I was always- sometimes unknowingly working towards being involved in music. I was 24 at the time & at a crossroads. Modeling was what I was known for but I wasn’t entirely fulfilled as a creative. Something sparked in me and I decided it was time to go in another direction. With faith in my music taste, encouragement from one of the most important people in my life (named Melissa who passed a year later in 2017), and an iPad I began to teach myself how to DJ from scratch via an app named Djay. Starting sooner would’ve likely been similar to how my journey ended up unfolding in real time, just earlier which would’ve given me so much more experience/knowledge. I’m 100% okay with how things turned out btw, BUT lol it’s a bit irritating on a personal level because the only difference between 24 year old me & 18 year old me is the belief that I could actually do it. I legitimately didn’t know it was a possibility for someone like myself unable to read music, no musical training, or any musical family to become a DJ. I was just as capable & able to be just as disciplined then- but none of that mattered at that point simply because I didn’t believe it was an option for me. I guess I just wished the spark happened sooner. There wasn’t any reason I couldn’t have been doing both modeling and DJ’ing. I didn’t realize I could pursue multiple passions at the same time. I do believe things usually happen the way they’re destined to so I almost feel like I would arrived at being who I am now a bit earlier. We’ll never know though lol!
Rahmar , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I like to think of myself as an artist full circle. I’ve been a dancer, a model, a designer, a DJ, a rapper, a beatmaker, etc. For as long as I can remember I’ve been a music lover. My father passed that right along to me exposing me to very eclectic sounds from a young age. I never knew where that love for music would lead me but ending up becoming a DJ was very fitting. I’m a quintessential 90’s baby, a gamer, a nerd, bisexual, & surprisingly ghetto lol. All parts of myself come together in my music taste & style of DJ’ing. I have a little something for everyone. More importantly I have what you didn’t know you needed. My transitions & song selection probably set me apart the most as a DJ. I can seamlessly move between musical eras & genres. You literally never know what’s coming next in the best way. Honestly I’m most proud that I became a DJ. I said I was going to and I made that happen- nobody can take that from me. All the beautiful things that have happened since then is just extra icing on the cake. I’m big on authenticity. I believe in doing things with intention and giving your all.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Have the courage to like/believe in something first without the co-sign of another person or entity with “notoriety” playing a factor. That gets us no where. People will causally have geniuses in front of them & refuse to give them acknowledgement just because there’s not already a ton of people making them feel comfortable in doing so as well- or so I’ve seen. We need to stop gatekeeping awesome things- you gain nothing by being the only fan of something that deserves to be experienced on a larger scale. Share awesome things with awesome people. Never doubt the distance art can travel especially when being shared between awesome people. It should be a symbiotic occurrence. Personally I love discovering something a loved one might also enjoy. Sharing music is quite literally one of the reasons I DJ and want to go into music supervision for tv & film. We also need to keep the wheel turning as far as opportunities are concerned. Let deserving people get their shine without forgetting in order to keep this creative thing moving forward we have to keep lighting and passing torches. We could also stop participating in the social media algorithm dance- or whatever that means. Paying artists their worth in a timely manner might help somewhat too.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I believe it’s a superpower to have the ability to form an idea & through whatever your medium of art- manifest it into something that exists in the world. Something you can hear, see, touch, taste, and or experience. That’s incomparably powerful & beautiful. As an artist you’re able to create things that will live on infinitely- us being an extension of the art means we live on infinitely as well.
