We recently connected with Shannon Meinking and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon , thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
When I think about the past, I regret how long it took me to pursue my passion for artwork. When I became a stay-at-home mom I lost my identity. It took a complete change of my routine for me to realize I can make time to create for myself. Prior to this, I found myself making excuses, and my love for creativity was never prioritized. I let society convince me that artwork wouldn’t create the cash flow that was needed to sustain a comfortable life and because of that, I lost valuable time working jobs just for the paycheck. The truth is, being an artist can bring plenty of financial opportunities once you accept that reality. If I could go back in time, I would ask myself, “if not now, then when?” There is never a perfect time to chase your dreams but each day is an opportunity to work toward them. Denying yourself that joy and opportunity are heartbreaking. If you are questioning if you should be following your passions- the answer is an immediate yes. Just start now.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My studio is based out of my home in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This area provides much inspiration and that is reflected in my landscape paintings. Landscapes with dreamy clouds and rolling hills fill my studio. When I’m not painting landscapes you’ll find me studying florals through paintings or line drawings. I don’t have a singular love when it comes to creativity. Some other things I enjoy making include jewelry, suncatchers, floral arrangements, abstract works, watercolors, and fiber art.
I am most proud of my ability to adapt my business to meet the needs of my clients. Commissions are something I prioritize and enjoy working to make custom works for specific spaces. I think it’s important for humans to connect through art. Each piece of mine is loved for different reasons and I enjoy hearing why others connect with my work.
When I was envisioning my brand I wanted each person I connected with to feel heard. I pride myself on treating customers like my personal friends. They all deserve a safe space to share and learn. It’s my hope to inspire others to tap into their true callings and passions. While doing so I’ve made amazing connections and continue to grow a following of others who appreciate the raw beauty of life. Often times you will see me share a lot of my personal experiences and outlooks with my following. I also speak on the challenges I’ve faced in life in hopes to help the people I care about. I will be releasing a book soon about my childhood trauma and how artwork helped me heal. It’s scary but I know someone out there will value my vulnerability.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Connection. Taking what I’m passionate about and sharing it with the world can be scary. I’ve learned that humans are constantly craving connection. If I can pour my heart out into my work, and one person can feel something because of that, I’m successful. Hearing that my work creates joy and makes them fall in love with their space is such an honor. I’m constantly looking for feedback or new learning opportunities. Starting this business has allowed room for growth and insight from supporters and I’m forever grateful for that.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Not everyone is going to love what you have to offer and that’s okay. I used to get frustrated when certain pieces wouldn’t sell and would take it personally. I’ve learned over time that I won’t be the right fit for everyone. It’s important to remember you are creating for yourself and for the love of art and not for likes on social media.
