We recently connected with Melissa Romero and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
For many years I believed you had to work hard to be successful. I was born the daughter of a teen mom and alcoholic father. Throughout my childhood it was told to me that only when you work hard do you get to be successful. My mother, being the wife of an alcoholic, always had to pull double duty to make ends meet. My father, being an alcoholic, could never do enough to take us out of poverty. As a child, at the tender age of 6 my mother finally left my father because of his infidelity and inability to show up for the family. My mother met a man who was financially successful from illegal activities. We seemed to have a good life then; we travelled and bought anything we wanted, that felt like success. And my mother’s boyfriend didn’t seem to work hard. At the age of 8 my mother was arrested for possession of narcotics. She was working with her Cocaine dealer, boyfriend, and was caught with 2 kilos of cocaine. I quickly linked that working hard to have success must be the way, because when it comes easy it’s bad. So when I was old enough to work, I worked hard. I started working when I was 14 years old and worked many jobs and many careers very hard. I had a great “work ethic” people would say. I went to college got a career and worked hard as an elementary school teacher and I would ease myself on the weekends with alcohol to relax. Until I burnt myself out and had NOTHING to show for 20yrs+ of hard work. I started on my spiritual journey and realized that success wasn’t about working hard, it was about doing what you love and bringing your passions to life. Success was not about how much you do but how to love what you are doing and wakeup in the morning in joy for what you get to do. I learned that we are comprised of an energy called love and “The love that we are is waiting for our recognition, not achievements’. Recognizing the truth of who we are and living from that space is true success. You can’t fail!! Now I get to empower people to release those beliefs and live from that power; the power of love and acceptance of self.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started working on myself, for myself. In the beginning I never intended for this to be a career. The more I learned and healed, the more I wanted to share it with the world so that they too can heal. I started a vlog on instagram that would have many people contacting me and expressing how my words/teachings changed their lives/outlooks. I then was trained as an Energy healer and worked a few days a month doing that and I got to speak with people one-on-one and help them transmute their traumas and heal using my teachings as well as energy healing. Today I am the Spiritual Misfit, a barrier breaking empowerment coach; who guides people on a personal freedom journey from limiting beliefs to living the sweetest version of life possible. I help them activate the divine force necessary to make fearless decisions from the heart. My specialty is helping my fellow brothers and sisters connect with their true life purpose and empowering them with the tools to make it happen. As The Spiritual Misfit, I pride myself in offering practical applications to operate from an unapologetic space of self-love, forgiveness, and holistic success. Many consider this healing style and soul growth technique to be raw, real and deeply nurturing. An experience with me is guaranteed to awaken the dormant superpowers within you!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
What I think is most helpful in succeeding in the the field of Empowerment Coach and Healer is to be your most authentic self. A lot of people think that they have to be perfect to help others but I find that my way of relating to others as their equal opens up the space for their authenticity to shine through for them to be raw and unapologetic. I feel like my style of realness invites realness.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started this business because I knew it was the next step in fulfilling my life’s purpose. I am a single mother of 2 beautiful boys and we live a pretty good lifestyle that I’ve had to maintain. By surrendering when I feel as though fear could take over and realizing that I’m in my divine purpose, I’ve been able to sustain this life and trust. Surrender in a world where control is glamorized is a true act of resilience.
