We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniel Yadegar, MD a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
There have been numerous Wellbel customer success stories and the way I have measured them has not been by hair growth alone. After seeing the metamorphosis of my sisters hair and ensuing self-confidence, I knew we were onto something. In the last couple of years I have been on calls with cancer survivors who have lost all of their hair from the toxic effects of chemotherapy. I have spoken to women who have suffered from auto-immune conditions in which they have been left almost completely bald. To see their hair grow back is one thing. But to see them smiling and feeling empowered on the other side of the Zoom call really makes doing this work purposeful. When we created Wellbel, we had no clue of the impact we would have on people’s sense of self esteem and self worth. What started out as a hair supplement company really turned into a movement of self-empowerment and confidence. This, for me, are the parts of Wellbel that leave the longest lasting and deepest imprints on me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Dr. Daniel Yadegar and I am a Harvard trained board-certified doctor with specialties in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine. I am also the chief medical officer of Wellbel, a supplement company launched in 2020 that lives at the intersection of beauty and science. I formulated Wellbel originally to address my sisters’ hair loss. My sister Dalia experienced extensive postpartum hair loss after giving birth to her twin boys. My other sister, Diana, also experienced a form of hair loss called Alopecia Areata. When they came to me looking for help, I surveyed the market to see what I would be comfortable recommending to them that would be safe and effective. I was quite concerned with what I found. As a result, I set out to create a formulation that had just the right amount of high impact ingredients, was vegan, non-GMO, gluten free and did not contain any harmful fillers or artificial colors. That’s when Wellbel was born. I took all of the ingredients that I would want my loved ones to take and created a supplement company. Wellbel has the right building blocks and ingredients in order to help do two things: (1) decrease hair shedding and (2) improve the overall integrity and thickness of newly formed hair. I believe that our outer beauty and appearance is directly linked to our inner biology, and I can not think of a better example of this than Wellbel.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Wellbel initially started out as just a supplement company for hair, skin and nails. What has since emerged is a community of informed, connected and confident consumers. By working with influencers who believe in our product and ethos, we have been able to organically grow our social media presence. It was very important to the core team that we experience substantial organic growth before on-boarding digital advertising and performance marketing.
We routinely get on calls with micro-influencers to discuss our science and the importance of nourishing the body with the right ingredients. Once they experience the transformation for themselves, they usually share it on their social platforms. This kind of authentic story-telling, founded in not just an external beauty transformation, but also an internal shift in self-confidence, has been a meaningful tool for increasing our social media presence and reach.
In keeping with our culture of community and connectedness, we also reach out to every person who tags us and make time for them to speak with the founders. It is important that our customers know us as not only a company with an effective product, but as the compassionate humans behind the brand as well. We found that when you create authentic engagement and community you create a captive audience without having to start with the conventional path of digital advertising.
Lastly, it’s all about outcomes. When you have a product that actually works, the word spreads like wildfire. Hair Stylists share with their clients. Friends share over weekend brunch. Doctors share with their patients.
We have always been mission and outcome driven, and this combination has been a powerful way to build our social media presence and brand.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
A book that has greatly impacted me both personally and professionally is Eckhart Tolle’s “Power of Now”. In a day and age with sensory overload, social media, and endless news updates, being able to lean into the present moment has been invaluable. Oftentimes we replay the past or forecast too much into the future. As a result, we become untethered from the present moment and that is stifling for joy, peace, and creativity.
This concept of being in the present moment is engendered in the Wellbel culture. While we are aspirational, the team really focuses on the here and now. This makes for a work environment that is fun, creative, and meaningful. It also echoes our philosophy on wellness and how everything from health and beauty to mental health starts with self-care and mindfulness.
