We were lucky to catch up with Kyshaya Hariley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyshaya, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
The best investment I made was building a community of Artists and Creatives, that all shared one dream. As a dancer, or any type of creative, one often finds themselves trying to find their “home” in the industry. My company, The Dynamic Movement LLC, is not just a company, but it is a movement. Moving 6 states away to a city where I knew no one, just to follow my dreams, was the biggest and best risk that I have ever taken. My company has progressed greatly within the last few years, and continues to grow, with the hard word and determination from my team and I.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kyshaya “Shaya” Hariley, and I am from Neptune, NJ. I moved to Florida in 2019, with my company, originally called the “Dynamic Dancers”, to dig deep into my goals and dreams. I later expanded the company and renamed it “The Dynamic Movement”. I come from a background of singers, dancers, and producers. Being in the industry has always been a love of mine. It’s in my blood! I think I am most proud of the fact that I had enough courage to leave my hometown to start over, and create something that is bigger than me. My company focuses on personal development, for not only dancers, but a wide range of creatives, including, but not limited to, vocal artists.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My advice for managing a team and maintaining high morale would be, to have grace and be personable. Often times a lot of business owners focus entirely on details, deadlines, and accuracy. When working with people of many different backgrounds, skill levels, and personalities, it can be difficult to be in unison 100% of the time. At the end of the day, everyone is human, and far from perfect. We as business owners should have grace and be personable with our teams. I feel as though when you can step out of the CEO role from time to time and focus on making the company a family instead of a factory, you earn a lot more respect.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson that I had to unlearn was “You must make sure everyone around you succeeds”. A wise individual once said, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it”. Even though people share the same passions as you, doesn’t necessarily mean that they share the same drive as you for it. Being a person who wants to make sure everyone wins can be difficult when it comes down to separating the business. Losing and gaining team members is always a hard but necessary lesson. You can’t take everyone with you on the journey to success, and you can’t make people hungry enough to take that hike with you.
