Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Willie Mack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Willie, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Hands down my most meaningful project thus far has been releasing my ep Handsome. That project is the result of me fully trusting myself and betting on me. I started working on a project in late 2018 entitled “GloUp Gumbo”. Although I liked the project I didn’t love it. I wanted something that truly showed off my vocal capabilities , something I could play constantly and never get tired of . I wanted to SANG !!! So at the end of 2020 I decided to scratch GloUp Gumbo and in early 2021 I began work on what would become Handsome. It didn’t take off right away and I even considered just going back to the old project but one faithful day in March I received a track from my brother Joe who simply said ” I made this with you in mind ,see what you can do with it”. That song would become my first single “Witness” and from there it took off. Each song complimented the other so well that once I was finished the ep had basically sequenced itself. During that time I pushed myself as an artist, writer and vocal arranger. I explored different areas of my voice and pushed myself to the very ends of my vocal range. When I tell you everything worked itself out from the mixing to the features all the way down to the cover shoot. I never in my life felt so aligned. It may sound cliché but Handsome is my baby (It literally took nine months to make lol)

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a singer song writer all around entertainer from the south side of Atlanta. My music is a mixture is R&B, Soul , Gospel. steeped in the deep south with a twinge of inspiration from the 90’s . I’ve been actively perusing a career in music professionally since 2013. I write songs that come from my heart and personal experience. When people listen to my music I want them to be able to relate on a personal level. I want to inspire the masses in a way that has never been done before.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to unlearn in regards to my music and life in general is the idea of time. Society teaches us that we are suppose to have certain things by a certain time. For example when I was a kid I thought I would be “discovered” at the tender age of 16 get signed to a major record deal with Columbia records and drop my first single “What’s Wrong” (a song I wrote when I was 10) featuring Lil Bow Wow. As you can imagine when I turned 16 and was not yet signed I thought I was behind and spent a majority of my years trying to catch up. This caused me great anxiety which lead me to believe that I had missed my chance to make my dreams come true. Once I let go of my time constraints life opened up to me. I started meeting the right people and being in the right places which led to more opportunities to do what I love and share my story. I believe that once that deal does come God will make up the time and I will be able to do all the things I use to dream of and even things that I can’t even fathom.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first started to write songs no one would work with me. People who had the means to help me for whatever reason just didn’t. I reached out to every producer I knew even offered to pay but no one would return my calls. One day I was waiting outside of my job venting to my best friend giving her my best “Woe is me” monologue when she stopped me and said “Why don’t you just do it yourself”. I took those directives, downloaded Garageband on my tiny iPhone 4s and was able to create over 60 songs. Some of them like Dreamer’s Journal and Birds were even recorded and put on Handsome.
