We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberley Montgomery a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
As a young black professional woman, I wanted to be able to provide a space for other novice therapists of color to receive supervision and guidance while navigating the world of private practice counseling. I have provided opportunities for many men and women of color to provide therapy to the families in our community and learn how to build their own practice. I take pride in creating an inclusive workplace that not only engages therapists of color, but also provides clients the opportunity to be served by someone they can relate to and feel comfortable with.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a licensed professional counselor with a private practice, Therapy Inspired. I have a Master’s degree in Counseling and I am working on my doctoral degree in counseling with a focus on trauma. I enjoy working with individuals who have experienced a traumatic event and are trying to figure out how to heal from the experience. I treat PTSD, anxiety, depression, and I provide behavioral interventions. I fully believe in the power of hope, healing, and resilience. The work that I have done over the last 12 years has taught me that when people are equipped with the skills and the support they need, they are able to overcome some of the most difficult situations. I am proud to be able to serve children, teens, adults, and couples. The many years of trainings have allowed me to be able to empower people about their mental health. I find so much joy in being able to advocate for my clients, for mental wellness, and for the power of healing. Therapy Inspired has become a place for families to engage with as they navigate the difficult situations that occur in life. We are proud to serve our community.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Five years ago I was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that completely shut off my kidneys. I have been on dialysis since February 2017. Though it has been difficult balancing dialysis, chemo infusions, my therapy practice, and my large family of 6, I did not allow it to stop me from pursing my purpose. I allowed this illness to create a fire in me and from that fire, Therapy Inspired was created. My chronic illness has created physical, mental, and emotional challenges and through it all, I have been able to pull through stronger. I use my chronic illness to help me understand my clients and the individuals I serve. I will not allow my illness to stop me from creating an impact in this world and I will continue to walk in my purpose by providing counseling to the people in my community.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner is my husband. He is an exceptional person and one of the greatest business minds I know. Together, we have been able to use our strengths and build Therapy Inspired. Brandon Montgomery is the operations behind Therapy Inspired. We met in college and we always knew we would be a force together. Together, we have created a flourishing practice.
