We recently connected with Jocelyn Perez and have shared our conversation below.
Jocelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be successful in your career or in life in general I believe it takes a lot of work, perseverance, and dedication.
Everyone has a different view on success but in my perspective success means reaching the achievement of your goals. No matter if it’s a small term goal or a long term goal once reached it will bring the feeling of accomplishment and success.
Overall, I believe you already succeeded in life when you are doing what makes you happy and enjoy the most.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, my name is Jocelyn Perez. Houston makeup artist/hairstylist and owner of “Makeup By Jocy.” I offer makeup and hair services for weddings, quinceañeras, and any special occasion.
Growing up, I always had a passion for makeup. I loved doing my own makeup on my spare time but I never saw the makeup industry as my main career. I attended San Jacinto College and the University of Houston-Downtown and studied education back in 2016. While in college I worked at an elementary school and also did makeup on the weekend as a “side hustle”. I started noticing my clientele increasing so I decided to dedicate my time strictly to makeup. I saw the benefits of making my own work schedule, being my own boss, and loving what I do.
Looking back throughout the years my business has come a very long way. My work and skills have improved tremendously! I am always open into learning new techniques and taking courses from other artist so I can offer a better service to my clients.
I am most proud about getting the same clients returning to me even after years. I have had the privilege of glamming girls for their quinceañeras, senior portraits, prom, and even leading up to their wedding day. It shows how my clients truly appreciate my work and trust me for important events in their lives. I am so grateful for each and everyone of my clients, without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I have a lot of plans in mind for the future of “Makeup by Jocy” including a new studio, makeup classes, and much more. I am hoping in 2023 I will be able to accomplish everything I have planned to keep my business growing.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In regards to my personal life this year has been pretty rough and full of unexpected surprises. After really thinking about the last few months, I have the perfect example of how to correctly answer this question.
As a makeup artist, our work is planned out and scheduled months in advance. The thought of canceling all of my appointments did cross my mind because I just didn’t have the mental stability to work. Without going into detail, I will say I was in a really dark place in my life. I decided to put my personal life aside and focus on my clients. I believe this showed the perfect example of resilience because even after everything I was going through I still managed to bounce back from a very difficult time and keep doing what I love. I met amazing new clients who appreciate my work and I am so happy I managed to find a way to keep working. It eventually led up to this amazing interview opportunity that would’ve never happened if I would have quit.
No matter what you are going through always take a positive perspective from your situation. I promise you will be rewarded at the end!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is a very important part of my business and is how I get most of my clients.
Initially, I started getting clients by word of mouth and recommendations but I wanted people to see my work online as well. In 2016 I decided to open up my official business page on Facebook where I publicly showed pictures and videos of my work. The benefits of social media is that anyone can share your post and is visible to a great number of people. The more you post the more potential clients you get.
The best advice I could give to someone who wants to start exposing their business on social media is to keep posting and engaging! Don’t compare your followers or number of likes to other businesses because many times I would find myself doing that and get discouraged. By posting frequently you will grow your following each and every day that will eventually lead to more clients for your business.
If you are an artist or have your own business you need to really take advantage of each and every social media platform. It’s fast, inexpensive, and an effective way to reach thousands of people.
