Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allyson Zajac. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Allyson, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Although it is often measured by one’s own standards, I believe that there are several things that enable success. Patience, embracing change, and passion have been the pillars that have guided me throughout this journey and led to my greatest work. Patience and embracing change have been crucial as I encounter new cities, people and styles that all bring unique challenges while capturing their natural beauty. I have lived in many cities throughout the United States which has caused me to understand how this has been a large part of my success. Most importantly the passion that I have for not only my work, but the ability to forever capture a moment in time for my subject is what drives me to improve my craft. Knowing that the feeling of a first kiss at the altar, or a baby’s first steps will be a cherished memory that lives on through my work is an amazing feeling for me. I was very fortunate to expand into engagement photos when I moved to Dallas, Texas, which further led to my first wedding photography opportunity and I attribute that success to patience, change, and passion. It has been wonderful to achieve the success I have thus far and I am excited to see what I will learn next!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Currently residing in Far North Dallas, I am a photographer who specializes in natural light photography and I am the photographer for Title Boxing McKinney. On a more personal note, I am a Marine Corps spouse, a graduate from The Citadel – Military College of South Carolina, and a fitness and boxing enthusiast.
I got into photography when I was younger. I always had a camera on me while growing up, even if it was a disposable one, and I continued taking photos throughout college and as an adult. I didn’t learn the ins and outs of photography until I was in college and took a photography class at The Citadel. I learned about editing in Lightroom and how to shoot in manual mode. I have been professionally shooting since I graduated college back in 2014 and I haven’t put my camera down since.
Due to being a Marine spouse, I have moved to several different locations where I have been able to grow my photography by taking photos of nature, couples, families, and Marine homecomings. Here in Texas, I have had the opportunity to continue taking photos, but I have expanded my subjects to fitness events, senior portraits, boxing, and I have even taken photos of two weddings. I do not limit myself to one style of photography. Currently, I am the photographer for Title Boxing Club in McKinney, Texas and it has been rewarding being able to share the photos with the members of the club and the trainers. Overall, I think that my ability to capture someone’s personality and emotion is what sets me apart from others.
I am most proud of how far I have come from where I started and how I continue to grow. I have been featured in 3 art shows showcasing my work – 2 in San Diego and 1 in Dallas, and I have had the honor of capturing two weddings as well as multiple fitness events. The main things I want potential clients/followers to know about my work and I is that I take pride in my work and love to provide quality photos capturing ones personality through my lens.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Overall, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me has been seeing the expressions and receiving such positive feedback from my clientele as I show them their photos. Hearing how my photos made them see their life in a new perspective or how I captured their family’s personality perfectly in a photograph is such a great feeling. A great example is when a new mom saw the photos that I took of her and her family and she messaged me that she was emotional by how pure the photos were.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Personally, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been through word of mouth. Although I have several followers on Instagram, the majority of my followers aren’t located in the same city as I am in. I tend to move around frequently so networking with those I work with or those I live around has been most effective for me. I currently take boxing photos for Title Boxing in McKinney, Texas and taking their photos has led me to several photo opportunities that I wouldn’t have with just social media alone. For me, it’s who you know and it seems to work the best for me in any city that I am in.
