Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Djenane Gourgue. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Djenane, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I deeply believe that success is a concept that is different for every person. Whether it means having a great career, a home or a family, more money that you can count, success is something everyone strives to achieve. It makes you feel proud, it gives you excitement and it lets you know you have made an impact in a competitive world. I define my success simply by acknowledging that I was able to bridge my mission with my passion. For the first half of my life – success was more tangible and emotional. Because success is not something you attain without putting in effort. I worked hard, studied for good grades, earn decent money, tried to create the American dream (house, family, career). I was committed, focused, set goals with what I thought were realistic expectations. I adopted a mindset to accomplish these goals and grow as a person. It took hard work and I fell into the Overachiever/Imposter Syndrome.
During what I call the second half of my life, I want to share some nuggets of what my current journey to success it because it is more holistic and more spiritual. With several cancer diagnosis that I survived, now Rather than focusing strictly on the results of my accomplishments, I take notice of the small steps needed to achieve success of my journey. By doing this, I learned new and exciting things along the way, emotions that I did not know existed which helped you grow as a person. I learned how to reach out for support, self-heal, stick to my commitments and complete tasks within my pace, keep my goals light and fun in order to have an emotionally positive experience and keep moving forward without losing perspective.
The most rewarding feeling to me now is my ability to think positively regardless of certain external factors and have fun along the way of anything I do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As the vice president of the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce, I run the day to day operations of the chamber and interview every members which help me understand what each members ‘s goals and vision are for their businesses. I have been entrusted the mission to be the premiere marketing agency for the chamber of commerce over the past 10 years with my personal company, Afro Caribbean Groove LLC – a grass root marketing firm providing services and guidance to help grow the best and most innovative brands in the industry. Our team has extensive experience and has established a reputation as an innovative, dedicated, and fair partner. We combine modern technology with good old-fashioned relationship building to drive superior category management and deliver the highest level of customer service. Over the years we have worked on successful campaign for local and national organization, private and non-profit corporation, individual and government enterprises.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I was blessed with a certain maturity and I focus a lot on “delivery” and in order to deliver I have to be reliable and consistent There is nothing like counting on someone and feeling disappointed when the person does not deliver. I aim to continuously meet my deadlines, produce valuable work by collaborating and giving myself time. In all by being helpful to others and doing well in performance reviews to demonstrate accountability to my directors and peers.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
New clients are the lifeblood of all businesses. Although I was in corporate America before joining the private business world, I can easily say that word of mouth is still the best source. As someone with a technical background, during the years 2000 I felt that the technology would take the lead in providing businesses with clients. Modern word of mouth marketing uses different strategies online to reach the most amount of patrons. I consider myself a “social bee” and I like to network and meet new people. I enjoy interviewing new chamber members and , furthermore as a radio and television host having unique conversations with guests to inform the public brings me joy as well.
